1. When you have trouble concentrating while reading, what strategies do you use to help you focus on the reading material? The strategies I use are finding a quiet
place to stay focus on reading. Freeing my mind, before reading I try to clear my mind of
all thoughts and focus clearly on the reading assignment. Also while reading I give
myself breaks every once in a while, but making sure that I schedule them. Doing this is
a good way to relax and clear my mind. I also annotate and highlight the most important parts
of the reading section such as the thesis statement, main ideas and any supporting evidence.
I
also use blocking and following, I do this to cover up the text I am not reading and to follow
along with me as I read to avoid reading the thing twice. And I also use paraphrasing and
summarizing the text. I paraphrase by taking the paragraph or text that seems a bit confusing,
restating it aloud in my own words so I fully understand it. When I summarize I still restate it in
my own words but only the main ideas or key ideas of the passage.
2. Describe the reading and comprehension strategies you can employ to help make you a more effective reader. Previewing what I read so that I can get a better view of
the paragraph or text and a better understanding of what I am about to read and also
start reading with concentration, so that I can focus more on what it is that I am reading
so that it sinks in and I will be able to recall and memorize what I was reading. Also
reading slowly, taking notes and underlying key texts or paragraphs as I read them. I
find that way I am utilizing more than just 1 sense and the information is then stored
in
more than one part of my brain and it is more easier for me to remember and
understand.
3. How much time do you dedicate each week for reading the assigned chapters? Evaluate your daily activities determine what activity or activities you can change or eliminate to make more time for reading? I give myself around 2 to 4 hours each
week for reading the assigned chapters. My daily activities include house chores, taking
care of the babies, cooking, messing around on my phone listening to music, checking
messages on social networking sites, putting in job applications and checking emails. I
can eliminate my activities by prioritizing my time, estimating my weeks’ time
commitments between my personal life and school, setting up a daily to do list to help
me with time management so I can make more time for reading.
4. Review the skills discussed in the assigned reading material this week. How could each of these apply to your academic work? How could each of these apply to your professional work? I can apply the skills to my academic and professional
work because I learned how to identify primary reading sources, effective reading
strategies and how to comprehend the reading materials. When identifying primary
sources it ensures that the information that I am learning is accurate and based on
empirical data. How to comprehend the reading materials taught me how to apply
active reading with previewing, marking with concentration and reviewing. These skills
will ensure a successful academic journey by learning with understanding. These skills
are useful to the professional work when I am learning new materials on the job,
effective communication and developing goals to complete a task. Applying these skills
to both academic and professional work will allow me to be more assertive in all areas
of my life.
