Your Personal Statement
We strongly encourage you to submit a brief personal statement (250 to 500 words) as a way to get to know you as a person and more than a collection of classes and test scores. Relax, there are no wrong answers. But we do ask you to consider grammar, spelling and the content of what you wish to express.
Describe your professional and educational goals in conjunction with your selected major choice.
My childhood was filled with relocations and culture shock. As a five year old I was taken out of kindergarten here in California in order to move to Amman, Jordan. As a child I was an extremely social person and I was easily able to accommodate to the
Arabic schools and make new friends. No sooner had I become situated with my new environment than family circumstances forced us to move back to the states. In the middle of second grade, I was again pulled out of an all Arabic school to attend an
English school in California. My perseverance and hard work helped me become head of my class. After two quick years my paternal grandfather was diagnosed with advanced Alzheimer's. Again my family and I picked up and moved to Jordan to be with my father's family. We stayed in Jordan longer than we had stayed anywhere before, five years. We attended three different schools looking for the least abusive and highly academic school. At each school I was able to quickly situate myself and make close friends. These moves were very much to my benefit, I am now fluent in both the English and Arabic languages.
After five years of living in Jordan my maternal grandfather was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer. Again my family and I picked up and relocated to California where we faced many traumas in the space of six months. I watched as my grandfather deteriorated from a strong, healthy, active fifty-eight year old to an unrecognizable old man. I watched my mother bid him farewell and help him through the last stages of his life. I watched as my dying grandfather gave strength to his friends and family to help them through his ordeal. In this time I became a stronger more compassionate person. Through all this I was still able to resituate myself to yet another new school and environment. After the passing of my maternal grandfather, my paternal grandfather was brought to the states for medical treatment where he passed away two months after my maternal grandfather.
This was a difficult time for my family. We held to each other for help and support. Now what is still unbelievable to me even now over a year later is that my maternal grandfather's younger brother suddenly passed away three months to the day after my grandfather's passing. This seemed to be the last straw for my family. There was so many tears and broken hearts.
Through these hardships I have truly learned that "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger". As a family, we survived and became stronger and closer. As an individual, I have learned that life is too short to procrastinate and put a hold on your dreams. I will always try to reach my goals no matter what the obstacles. Seeing the different illnesses, diagnoses and situations helped assure me that I want to work in the medical field. It is my dream to find a cure for lung cancer and
Alzheimer's disease, to help families through these every day traumas and illnesses and to be a part of their miracle.
