My opening message in the online tutor group was:

Hi Guys,
Having read all the posts in here it seems that I am in the minority in saying I love all that Google do.
While I totally appreciate the slight negative opinions of others here in my personal opinion it all comes down to the fact that Google is actually a business and so has to make money. I appreciate that some of its dealings are a little 'shady' but show me a Global corporation that doesn’t come across this way in some elements of what it does. (Think Apple and its over priced media services.)
I hope you don’t mind my quoting you Valeria but I think you make a great point when you say
"Since the information that they can gather regarding myself is not potentially significant (or at least that is what I think), I don't really mind. I have nothing to hide, and if they have to intrude a little bit just to find out that actually I am not the bad guy so they can move on and find the real criminals"
This to me is the biggest point. Having worked within the Intelligence Environment for some years of my military time it amuses and baffles me that people get so annoyed over what they feel is their personal data being used and abused. One of our biggest flaw as Humans is to believe we are each individually so important that everything we ever put online is of interest to many millions of people, (Take the phenomenon that is twitter as an example) when in reality nothing at all you say or do on line is. Yes the sites you click on are monitored to target advertising etc. but that is not you personally they are looking at it is just a number. Be that an IP address or area code to post junk mail to.
Nathan you point about not having to put your real name, email etc. is a great one too. They can only know things that you personally surrender to them.
On a slight tangent but still very much Google and search engine orientated this article really does bring the whole George Orwell,

If someone told you “You are being watched every time you use digital communications, “how would you feel? The majority of people would probably feel discomfort. Sadly, you are being watched by the National Security Agency or NSA. While they allegedly keep us safe, the NSA shouldn't continue to monitor everyone’s digital communications. It gets every tax paying citizens money involved. They violate an amendment of the constitution. Likewise, there is a major loss of privacy. They simply have access to too much information. Aspects of my practice that I would like to improve for PP4 would be to research suitable activities that may be utilised into regular play activities and would allow the children the opportunity to highlight their thoughts, fears or concerns through play in dealing with issues they might find difficult to comprehend or struggle to deal with emotionally. Although staff members who work in childcare within Northern Ireland currently have to attend a course on ‘Child Protection’ I feel extra training would be of great benefit in helping staff within my setting to achieve the goals outlined in the Curricular Guidance for Pre-School Education (DENI/DHSSPS, 1997) for the section on Personal, Social and Emotional, in helping them to recognise the subtle changes arising from various difficulties that children may encounter from home or parents. Examples could be dealing with the death of a relative, exclusion issues or dealing with the birth of a sibling.…

Current statistics show, “the US National Security Agency (NSA) is collecting the telephone records of tens of millions of Americans… on an ‘ongoing daily basis’” (BBC News). They also spy on the internet traffic on the most popular websites such as Google, Yahoo!, Facebook, and YouTube in search of any possible “threats” against the United States. Data has become a prominent source for information about people to be discovered over the past few years. While the collection of personal data is no immediate harm to anyone, it becomes an issue when the data is used for malicious purposes. This includes spying and tracking people based on their internet history. Furthermore, data can be used by police forces to predict crimes and their victims before they occur. Although this may seem like a flawless idea, it can have harmful side-effects, such as removing the opportunity for decisions to be made by the person.…

The type of information over the last thirty years has changed to fit wants and needs of the public. The invention of computers and cellular phones has dramatically changed how information is able to be attained and provided. People all over the world are able to research information on subjects they are interested in regardless of location, nationality, language and personality. There are many government conspiracies on tracking and storage of information through the computer ISP (Internet Service Provider) that help monitor trends. “Many ISPs compile anonymous browsing logs and sell them to marketing companies,” in other words, if marketing companies can use private information to their benefit why wouldn’t the government use the same information as a benefit to further their policies (privacypolicies.com).…

    Surveillance In America

This is used as an opportunity by dictators to control the hearts and minds of their people in a dangerous form of propaganda. Violating privacy is something that destroys the very ideals that our founders fought for. Taking over the privacy of citizens under the justification of safety is a threat that is more subtle but no less dangerous than foreign enemies, fostering a rot of individuality. In addition, business, the heart of our free-market economy, suffers under surveillance. This matters to every U.S. Citizen, as the choices made about security now will change the way Americans act and how the U.S. Government treats its citizens for decades. Should the government gain the right to become evermore intrusive into the lives of Americans, it will be another step in the direction of big government. On the other hand, refusing the government and denying them the right to access our information will guarantee the freedom of not only Americans but future Americans for decades to come.…
