Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) can occur frequently and may cause serious damage. TBI can happen when a bump, jolt, blow, or any head injury causes damage to the brain. MIllions of people a year suffer brain injuries in the United States alone. More than half of those million incidents require the patient to be taken to a hospital because of the severity of the injury. Depending on how severe the injury is, it could cause serious brain damage and potentially be life threatening. Half of all TBIs occur from motor vehicle accidents.
Some symptoms of TBI may not appear until days or weeks after the injury happens. One of the mildest forms of a TBI is concussion. Concussions can cause headaches, nausea, neck pain, dizziness, ringing in the ears, and extreme tiredness.
Some people who have a moderate to severe will have these symptoms along with others which include: a headache that gets worse and doesn’t go away, repeating vomiting and or nausea. More symptoms include convulsions and or seizures, inability to wake up after falling asleep, slurred speech, weakness and numbness in the arms and the legs, and dilated eye pupils.
Serious traumatic brain injuries should always be handled with medical care as soon as possible. Treatment and outcome depend on how severe the injury is and how fast the injury gets treated. TBI can cause a very wide range of emotions, changes, affected thinking, sensation and language. TBI can also be associated with PTSD. PTSD or Post-traumatic stress disorder is a mental health condition triggered by experiencing or seeing a terrifying. PTSD can’t be cured but there are treatments that may help. PTSD is very common as it occurs more than 3 million times in the US
