Tomorrowland
Ten years ago, the original founders, the brothers Beers together with the Dutch event and entertainment company ID&T started something remarkable, an unseen worldwide connection that grew into a unique symbol of global unity. I want to take you all on a journey into a world unlike any other, a world that is full of vibrant colours, champagne showers and music that will have you dancing uncontrollably. This place is something that you would have only imagined in your wildest dreams, a fairy tale incomparable to any other, a Mecca for electro music from across the globe. This is Tomorrowland.
Tomorrowland is one of the world’s largest and most prominent electronic dance music festivals. Happening only once a year, this legendary festival brings roughly 180 000 people together from around the world to bask in the euphoria that is Tomorrowland.
It’s unique, psychedelic carnival atmosphere is complimented by its electronic and dance music line-up that also features other similar genres such as trance, house, rave and dubstep. With sounds taking precedence over lyrics, electro rhythms face almost no language barriers and that’s a major part of the music’s popularity around the world. Some of the past line-ups include Skrillex, Swedish House Mafia, David Guetta , Steve Aoki, Avicii, Armin van Buuren and over 100 other DJs.
This jaw-dropping, totally mental three day festival is known for its intense energy and out of this world decorations. Tomorrowland has a surreal quality that sets it apart visually from its competition in the dance music field.
Not only are the beats captivating, but also the entire environment, which will send your senses into a magical bliss. Together, what you see and hear is unlike anything you have ever experienced before. Every year the festival organisers invest a lot of effort and manpower in decorating the festival site, which greatly contributes to the total experience for the festival-goer. E.g. in 2011, Tomorrowland took

He mentions that Tesfaye already has five top-selling songs on Billboard this week, one of the most esteemed countdowns in North America. He also names some of the influential and powerful people in the music industry who also attended the concert such as Kardinal Offishall, Bell Media production president Randy Lennox and Universal Music Canada CEO Jeffery Remedios. This communicates that the Weeknd is very prominent in the music industry and he is attracting the attention of big names who see a great deal of potential in him. Above all, he mentions Tesfaye’s world tour which signifies that, not only is he popular in North America, but he is admired worldwide and enough fan around the world to fill stadiums and play shows. Another effective rhetorical device employed is diction. The author’s vocabulary is very informal and almost conversational in nature making the targeted age group more interested in reading this review. Due to the fact that the topic of the article is The Weeknd, those interested in reading this article are most likely are young adults that is why the word choice is colloquial and for ease of reading. Diction is also used to emphasize and further praise Tesfaye. He utilizes adjectives such as “buoyant”, “impressive” and “stratospheric” to describe each the concert and to prove that he is an outstanding performer…

The first thing that caught my eyes was the colorful and unique dance regalia or outfit worn by the dancers. Bright colors such as yellow, orange, red, and light blue wrapped around the dancers beautifully. The older looking male dancers were wearing the feather warbonnets on the head and bustles on the back. Dancers with striking multicolored beaded and fringed outfits were crowding the dance floor. Some of the female dancers dressed simple with their colorful fringed shawls. I noticed that some dancers even had bells attached to their ankles or dance outfits that they wore. I also was told that the feathers and leathers used were inherited from their father up to their great grandfather. The sight was so magnificent – it made me excited to stay for the show.…

Throughout Zeds Dead’s performance at Ritchie Coliseum, another sense was thoroughly engaged in addition to the auditory element of lyrics and synthetic instrumentals: vision. Zeds Dead performance had several marked features of visuals that exemplified the sensualistic nature of electronic dance music. Accordingly, “…such syntheses and modulations are carried out in the ‘laboratory’ of the club, where in most cases the pitch-black darkness is impregnated by techno music, a few lights, the occasional strobe and artifcial smoke.” (Vitos, 2). To typify this characteristic of EDM, Zeds Dead included many multicolored beams of light rotating over the cloud and flashing lights typically when the beat dropped, in an otherwise dark room. Additionally, there were designed visuals in the background, typically of a “trippy” rotating vortex,…

Music has much more to offer than what we just hear on the radio, whether it be its genre or the experience it can give us. There are four performances which exemplify this: the “Arabian Waltz” by the Silkroad Ensemble; “Believe” by John Pascuzzi, Steve Sklar, and Dr. Richard Grossman; "Quarter Chicken Dark," "Attaboy," and "Here And Heaven" by Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer, Chris Thile, Stuart Duncan, and Aoife O'Donovan; and “One Love” by the JJI Exile Brothers. The “Arabian Waltz” by the Silkroad Ensemble is a suspenseful yet intriguing song. I was initially surprised at the sheer amount of people and different instruments, as there were many I didn’t even recognize.…

People from different cities, and states come down just for this event. There are six stages, dozens of rides, and a full gallery’s worth of art, cool off zones, vendors, food and beverages. We were surrounded by the smell of popcorn and cotton candy. It felt like the carnival you liked to go to as a kid. Everywhere we went there were people dressed like rainbows. The most common form nowadays are raves. Raves are all-night dances that feature music at very loud levels of volume and flashing lights. They’re basically huge parties for bored city youths. But for some, raves are a sensual "psychic voyage" next to a religious experience (Sillars n.pag.). The youths that attend these raves are known to be tripping on a hallucinogen, most commonly ecstasy while staying up all night and dancing to this loud music. Similar to music festivals, raves create an ambience to a listener. Youths usually use the loud music with pulsating rhythm to create a drowning personal unconsciousness. The music played at raves is techno, it has a steady beat. Sillars stated that the DJ was like a priest or shaman that controls the lighting and the volume in the rave to put youths in an altered state of consciousness. "A large part of the concept of raves is built upon sensory overload,"(Sillars n.pag.) This sensory overload involves the visual vibrant colors from the flashing lights and strobes, the music hallucinations that form just from listening to music, and the spiritual out-of-body experiences. This is very similar to people who attend music festivals, almost for that exact same purpose. Raves and music festivals are the most common forms of this modern youth and hallucinogens…

When deciding on a music concert for this course, World Music 327, there were five different choices for me to choose from. It was required to attend a concert musical performance of world or ethnic music. The music selected for the purpose of the concert had to be from music I would not normally focus on or attend a performance in that particular style of music. It was definitely outside of the box or my comfort zone, which I am glad I attended. For me, I decided based on location due to the fact that I wanted to take my entire family for a nice day out, and enjoy some ethnic music that we have never experienced. With this in mind, and not knowing what I had in store for me, I decided to attend the concert on July 29, 2012 at La Jolla Cove to watch and observe Theo & the Zydeco Patrol. This concert was scheduled to play from 2 to 4 pm, but went till approximately 4:15pm, with an intermission at the middle of the concert at 3, that lasted 15 minutes. The concert was part of the 29th Annual Summer Concert Series 2012, and was named “La Jolla Concerts by the Sea”. All concerts for these particular series are free of charge to the public and are family oriented, due to the fact the location of the concert was right next to the beach and provided entertainment for the family. For this particular band this week’s concert was sponsored by Cymer, Incorporated.…

What is it that makes humans human? In Ridley Scott’s film, Blade Runner, This very question is asked. The distinction between humans and machines is blurred. Throughout the film, humans continuously disregard one another, only caring about themselves. They view all of the “Replicants” as mere objects, easily tossing them aside, whereas the “Replicants” continuously show more human traits. Ridley Scott’s great use of mise-en-scene only helps to reinforce that.…
