To What Extent Should We Study American History
Many people have always looked back at America’s history, but the real question is has anyone ever seen American history as our hope for the future? America has so much history that not everyone has learned about or even remembered.
George Santayana the spanish essayist once said, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” History is more than a study of things that has happened in the past it’s more on the decisions we as people make. From the choices, the results we get, and to the possible consequences everyone gets from the decisions they have made. People who learn the history learn an extreme amount of lessons and have a better chance of making better choices just by lessons we learned from the past.

To understand the future, we must first understand the past, and how we got to our current point in the first place. In my previous years through grade school, history has been a prominent subject in my learning experience. Through nearly every subject, history has been a basic building-block along the road of schooling - whether it be through English, Mathematics, Art, Science, etc, they all started somewhere, which we unfold through history.…

This quote knows a lot of variations, for example: “Those who don't know history are doomed to repeat it” or “Learn from history or you're doomed to repeat it”. Another famous quote with a similar message is the quote of Marcus Tullius Cicerio which is: “To be ignorant of what occurred before you were born is to remain always a child. For what is the worth of human life, unless it is woven into the life of our ancestors by the records of history?” or, in short,: “To be ignorant of the past is to remain a child”. The meaning of these quotes is that if you don't know the past, you won't be able to learn from it, which will make you repeat your old mistakes over and…

When we are infancy we tend to accept the world how it is and is not until we reach adolescence is when we begin to questions the things that we have always been told. I agree with Paz that a lot of our history that is pass down is lost because of this “mask” people tend to hide in. Consequently, a lot of our history is loss due to the fact that people tend to hide their shame and emotions in order to not be judge publicly. So when we are learning about the past we should always see it through an open mind knowing the fact that the stories that are being told are not always what they appear to be because of all the tragedy going on during…

History books today are flooded with pointless tasks for memorization, which is just an easy fix to get students a good grade on a test, without them actually retaining the information in the chapter. Not being properly educated on past events gives the future more opportunity for mistakes, considering they will not be able to compare past and present problems in hopes to not make the same mistakes again. It is easy for students to brush off this information because it is taught in such a matter of fact sort of way, not showing any passion, just information does not make a person interested in a subject. When a student can have actual feelings regarding an event, that is when it sticks. When they can really understand what is going on, through real stories and encounters, they have a more thorough understanding of the world and are better prepared to participate in…

History. We all have heard or learned something about our history. But, what distinguishes us one from another? Nearly all of us have learned about the past. A large percentage of us even understand the hardships and accomplishments of the past. But, how many will actually use our history to help shape future? In fact, the Harvard Business School released a study that classified 3 percent of people as successful, 30 percent of people as somewhat successful, and the other two-thirds as simply watching life pass them by.
