The article titled “Working at McDonald’s” by Amitai Etzioni is in short describing how there is no individuality in working at a fast food restaurant. Kids have no initiative and cannot make many individual decisions for themselves. There is no real career training when it comes to working in a fast food restaurant. In saying this, Etzioni is correct. After all he the winner of the 2001 John P. McGovern award in Behavioral Sciences. He states that McDonald’s is bad for kids, not because of the food itself (which is still unhealthy) but because of the fact that they are working for them. Also, the hours children have to work are ridiculous. Etzioni is experienced enough to judge whether or not things are good or bad for others. Other than his award for Behavioral Sciences, Etzioni has also received many prestigious awards like the seventh James Wilbur Award for Extraordinary Contributions to the Appreciation and Advancement of Human Values. The Ethos in the paper is strictly brought on by that. Pathos, however, is presented more in the article. Etzioni says that it is BAD for children to be working at McDonald’s. There are many ways that he expresses this, whether it be the hours of work or the missed school work from the ridiculous hours. The job itself is very un-educational. Teens working at McDonalds learn very few things if any at all. So what if you can open a register or make a fast food item fast? That is very useless in the real world. There is very little room for individual decisions in the fast food industry. No one can be able to show initiative or stand out unless hard work is met, but even then, it is fast food! No one is going to really care whether or not the food is beyond expectations in one little fast food restaurant. Logos stands out most in the article because Etzioni presents lots of
