The first similarity that I see is the relationship between the first gods in the Theogony and the first things God creates in Genesis. In Genesis God creates the heavens and the earth and then light and dark (CM pp. 73). Similarly, in Theogony Gaia, the earth god, comes from the chaos and gives birth to Ouranos, the heaven, and Day and Night were also born (Theogony ln. 116-26). The second similarity I noticed is women were created in both as a response to men. In Genesis women were made as a companion to men, because all the other animals were found unsuitable by Adam (CM pp. 74-5), while in Theogony Zeus …show more content…
179-182). Another difference that I noticed is that procreation is a large theme in Theogony, while it is not mentioned in Genesis. In the Theogony all of the main gods of each era, i.e. Gaia, Kronos, and Zeus, all procreate with other gods to create new gods. Also when Kronus overthrows Ouranos it is by castrating him and his genitalia go on to create Aphrodite the goddess of love (Theogony ln. 323-332). The final difference I noticed is that the Theogony is more about the birth of the gods and how they came about while Genesis is more about the creation of the world. In the Theogony mankind just comes up in the story Prometheus and Zeus (Theogony Ln. 290-301), while Genesis describes how man was made (CM pp. 74-5). One of the reasons I think these myths differ is because the culture of the Greek people and Jewish people was different, In Greece their culture had a lot more shame towards reproduction organs unlike the Jewish culture. Another theory is that the Theogony was written as a story of the birth of the gods and performed at festivals, while Genesis was written as a religious text describing the creation of world. I think looking at the differences is more persuasive because they show more how the stories are unique, which gives them more of an
