Homework for the week of January 28, 2013

Read this week’s sheet for information on the review session.

Monday (due Tuesday): • Complete Friday’s homework, which was to “Find an article about the place at which you want to volunteer or the topic about which you want to demand change. CHUMM the article. Additionally, print information about the place (or cause) from its own website. CHUMM the printed information.” If your group members used the same readings (article or webpage), please staple them all together and have the person who has social studies earliest in the day hand them in. Make sure all your names are on them. • Tuesday we are in the Butler lab again.

Tuesday (due Wednesday): • Print and bring a copy of your notecards to Wednesday’s class. You will be working with them in Wednesday’s class. • Finish your annotated bibliography. Make sure you check your final product against the rubric at the bottom of the Bread and Research page. If you are part of a group, all of your citations and annotations should be in one document, alphabetized correctly. Your names should be typed on the top of the document. This is not an individual grade. If your annotations are separate from your groupmates, you will lose points. • Make sure you check your annotated bibliography against the rubric and the model. • Be aware that you will have a quiz on the Progressives that consists of 35 multiple choice questions on the 6th. The review session for this quiz is tomorrow after school. The quiz is on: • The 16th, 17th, 18th, and 19th Amendments • Reformers – their causes and their works (for muckrakers, know writings / drawings). o Jacob Riis o Lewis Hine o Ida Tarbell o Upton Sinclair o Lincoln Steffens o Thomas Nast (city / federal) o Ida B. Wells o Jane Addams o WEB du Bois o Frances Benjamin Johnston *

    Courbet the Wave

Beginning in the summer of 1869 Gustave Courbet produced a series of paintings depicting stormy seas during his stay at Etretat on the Normandy coast. The Wave (La Vague c.1872) exhibited in the National Gallery of Victoria is one such painting that features the central motif of a cresting wave. While many viewed the work as a simple realist seascape, the political implication of the work suggested by some of Courbet’s contemporaries is hardly discernable to the modern viewer. It can only be understood in light the historical context of the early 1870s in which France was entering a new democratic order and both Realism and Courbet had become inextricably bound to political affairs.…

Since annotated means enhanced or clarified with notes, an annotated bibliography is a list of sources presented with comments on content and usefulness to the research under way. The list must be presented in alphabetical order by the author’s last name or the first word of the title (for a resource that shows no author), regardless of form of the source; that is book, journal, Internet page, and CD-ROM—with author(s) or without Sources—all appear together on one list. Do not number the entries on the References list. The forms for the electronic resources appear accurately and carefully on the Learning Resources pages of the IRCC site, or you may pick up the printed “Documenting Electronic Resources APA STYLE” at the Ft. Pierce campus library and at the sites.…
