The Tuskegee Syphilis Research Study
Any research like the Tuskegee Syphilis Research Study could not be conducted today. There are many reasons as to why this type of research study cannot be conducted today. One reason is because people of all races are more aware of diseases that today’s society has now than they were back then. Also, people now day’s want to be treated for the disease(s) that they have whether than be experimented with. People in today’s society are also more aware of the researches that are taking place to not allow this type of study to be conducted.
In my opinion, the public should have not allowed this type of research to be conducted. In the research study on page 264 in our textbook (MLE Fourth edition) it states “ the public was outraged that poor black men had been subjected to a research project without their consent and denied treatment for a treatable disease in an attempt to gain what was seen as useless information”. The public in this research did not know anything about this research until the 1960s when a researcher working for the U.S. Public Health Service tried to have the project ended but when that was unsuccessful. He then notified the press and ultimately the project was stopped. This let the public be aware of the research being conducted. I think that the data that was collected should be used to treat those that develop syphilis in the future. The data could be used to see what researches could do differently in their next research.     This introduced one of the first ethical implications in this experiment which was withholding information to gain consent.The USPHS conducted a screening in search of infected participants. After they had chosen the few hundred men to be apart of the experiments they began to moved forward with the study.     I would not have been able to go around recruiting hundreds of poor, un-educated, black males knowing what the study entails. On top of that I would not be able to hold all their medical information in my hands and simply go around and tell them vaguely that they have “bad blood”. I agree with Kantian ethics in the fact that regardless of the consequences lying is always wrong. Going off of that I would have looked at everything behind the veil of ignorance. This is part of Rawl’s Theory of Justice. The veil of ignorance says that each person is unaware of sex, race, natural endowments, social position, and economic position. This is how I would have looked at every candidate who participated in the study. Instead, the PHS had the impression, “That the people were all rural, impoverished, and poorly educated black males makes it hard to avoid the conclusion that the PHS regarded the subjects as hardly more than experimental animals.” (Munson, p.418) From the last statement, it refers to the subjects as being nothing more than animals. The intent of the study was to record the natural history of syphilis within the Black population. The study included 600 participants who were mostly poor men and illiterate sharecroppers from the county. This study is considered to be a historical and cultural event that has impacted the world of Public Health in which it has helped bring ethical justice to individuals who are being misused and mistreated. “The advisory panel concluded that the Tuskegee Study was "ethically unjustified"--the knowledge gained was sparse when compared with the risks the study posed for its subjects” (CDC).
