The Time I Almost Hit Rock Bottom
The Time I Almost Hit Rock Bottom Stephanie Covelli

This is about the time I Almost Hit Rock Bottom.

The rocky roller-coaster ride departed September of 2012. Sitting beside “flying partner” Tony for ten hours to Italy followed a long distance relationship and overprotective Italian mother. Friends agreed the umbilical cord was still attached to him and seemingly I wasn’t worth fighting for. Remaining friends on Facebook led to pictures that were easily accessible. His rebound chick tagging pictures of them together. Blocking or deleting him was the wise idea I failed to accomplish during the break up. My heart was broken into thousand tiny pieces, feeling betrayed and underappreciated.

After 3 years of a work related injury, I was departing my family doctor’s office crying because he denied my cry of help for a diagnostic image of my back once again. My father joined me the next appointment for support and finally Dr. Fen agreed to send me to the specialist to further investigate the area of injury. It was during my parents visit to Italy that I learned the devastating results of my Thoracic Spine MRI. It was life changing and altering and therefore problematic to cope with a herniated disk at T7-T8. Seven days after returning home from Italy, my father had a heart attack. Shockingly when the emergency doctor was conducting a neurological assessment he had no choice but to confess to me about a childhood accident, which resulted in emergency surgery to keep remaining eye. Therefore 28 years of my life I never noticed the prosthetic eye. All these overwhelming changes were difficult for me to cope with; therefore I was heading towards an unexpected downward spiral in my life.

Without notice my bedside nursing job faded away. I was transforming from a full time registered practical nurse towards part time student. The role changes called for supervision of Larry the financial planner. Larry referred me to his associate Ken whom apparently

When people enter into any new relationship, they come to the new with a lot of old fears and unhealed emotional wounds (Daniel Sugarman p757). For example, I had an ex-girlfriend that goes by the name Maria. She was the last girl that I was intimate with before my wife Anita. Maria and I went our separate ways, because she did not want permanent commitment for the second time. Therefore, I moved forward without her, because I was in search of a soul mate. Six months later, I met Anita while attending an Emergency Medical Technical course at Southwestern College. Ironically, we were taking the same course with similar backgrounds; prior work history in medical field. Shortly after, we became study partners, and then passionate companions. Six months later, we got married and had two beautiful girls. Ten years later, I received a friend request via Facebook from my ex-girlfriend Maria. Secretly, I accepted the request; therefore Anita would have been upset, if she found out about Maria. Three months passed and Anita is still not aware of my friendship with my ex-girlfriend Maria. Then one day, I forgot and left my Facebook account unlocked; Anita found out the wrong way. It was a day I will never forget; I could not sleep for weeks, because I would be reminded of my treachery. As a result, I closed my Facebook account and never spoke to Maria…

“When I meet Kennedy there one day in May 2015, he’s dressed in a tweed jacket and a blue-flecked tie, and his hair is neatly parted and brushed back from his forehead in a way that reveals a small depression in his left temple. “That’s when he was putting the electronics in,” Kennedy says with a slight Irish accent. “The retractor pulled on a branch of the nerve that went to my temporalis muscle. I can’t lift this eyebrow.” Indeed, I notice that the operation has left his handsome face with an asymmetric droop.” First, Kennedy was urgent to achieve his goal -- helping ALS patients and locked-in patients, that he eventually…

In 1971, Greg began to experience serious problems with his health. Gradual loss of sight was the first and, probably, most important neurological symptom. Gregg's sight was getting dimmer, but he no longer complained; rather, he seemed to be growing more spiritual day by day. He no longer cared about his food or appetites. He was in a state of continuous daze. A strange smile on his face never left him. He stopped going out and was discouraged from any further contacts with the outside world. Unfortunately, it was not until 1975 that Greg's parents were allowed to see their son. By the time they could see their son, he would have had no further interest in surrounding reality. He would have been completely disoriented and totally blind. Upon his admission to the hospital, Greg was transferred to neurosurgery - brain imaging detected an enormous midline tumor that had destroyed his pituitary gland, the adjacent optic chiasm, and had extended on both sides…

Although, my educational interest is the catalyst for my pursuit of becoming a doctor; my motivation emanated from more than just wanting to learn how to assess and treat many different conditions. August 31, 2015 is a day I will never forget. My grandmother called and informed me that my mother had just gotten into a car accident. She told me that the car flipped about four times, immediately there was a multitude of thoughts and emotions running through my mind. When I was sixteen, my father was stricken with Guillain-Barre syndrome, an inflammatory disorder of the peripheral nerves, and he became paralyzed within weeks, and the healing process still persists today. I didn’t tell my mother; and I felt utterly alone- going to school, practice, studying, cooking meals, and tending to my father who was in the hospital. My father was in shambles, but I remained strong, and will-power kept us going and time…

Just a few days later, I went to a doctor, only to find out I needed a heart specialist. After a sonogram and other tests, a Ventricular Septal Defect was detected. In other words, doctors found out I was born with a hole in my heart. That day was a nightmare for me. I was haunted when the words “you’re going to need surgery” came out my doctor’s mouth, and knew it would come very soon. I cried the news to my sister who was outside in the waiting room. Never in a million years had I imagined that me, Martin Martinez, would ever have that sort of procedure done. Furthermore, doctors told me the surgery may…

Ever since my daughter Rachel’s death, I feel as if it has been drifting away my 30 year marriage with Franklin. I have myself to blame because, a week after her funeral I ordered a gravestone with mine and Franklins names and birthdays next to hers without discussing it with him first. At first I thought Rachel was just depressed like any other teenager at her age; however, I was unaware that the boy Rachel was talking to for the past months she met online. It all began May 18, 2005 Rachel was sixteen; we lived in a small suburb in Illinois. Rachel was a great student, always involved in school, was an athlete, and was always home by 8pm. That afternoon after she got out of school she asked me for permission to go to the mall with her girlfriends to just talk. Rachel was actually going to the mall to meet up with Kevin; Kevin was her online boyfriend. She was going to meet him for the first time in person after months talking to him online. Rachel was unaware of how dangerous and easy it can be for someone to pretend to be someone else online. She then found out that Kevin wasn’t the seventeen year old he claimed to be, he was actually twenty-five and the opposite of what he said he was. He offered her to still go on their date that they had planned for months, she gave him a chance because she was scared and forced to get in the car with him. Week by week Rachel started talking back to us, would always want time alone; she became a rebel and would never ask for permission. Frank and I were unaware of what was going on and decided to just give her some space and that when she would decide to; she would talk to us on her own. One night I woke up to a noise I heard in the living room as I was walking I saw Rachel sneaking out the house and realized she got in the car with an older man. My husband was asleep so I decided to go get her and bring her home before he found out about her sneaking out. They were parked about two houses away and…

Life was going to dramatically change as the nurses rolled me into the operating room. Back surgery is an invasive operation as it is, but imagine it in the eyes of a thirteen-year-old girl. The surgeons explained the procedure as a spinal fusion, with titanium rods placed along both sides of my spine for stability. This procedure would correct my scoliosis. Afterward, the pain was more than anyone should endure. I was not allowed to twist or bend, and I was unable to dress myself, or leave the house alone. This was difficult to accept, as I didn’t want to become dependent upon others.…

There was an in-school field trip to go watch the “Mad Scientist” that had come to teach us. From elephant toothpaste to homemade rock candy, I was hooked. Although I showed interest in science as a child, the incident that heightened my interest in pharmacy happened when I was in fourth grade. I had been complaining about leg pain for days but my parents didn’t seem to believe me. Along with the pain not residing, the swelling had also increased, which finally concerned my parents to take me to the doctor. I was told to rest, and ice my leg for a few days and then come back if the pain and swelling did not go away. Two weeks after the pain started, I got an x-ray which confirmed a benign tumor. Most people know the word tumor does not indicate good news, even if it is benign. However, I was little and didn’t understand what benign tumor, but I did understand the word tumor, and I knew nothing good was associated with that. I was just told to take some Advil for the pain until tumor could be removed. Several weeks after the onset of the pain I had finally gotten my tumor removed. While I was being wheeled back to my room, I had woken up earlier than expected and had not experienced such pain in my life. It took the doctors several minutes to realize that my IV had been unhooked and that I was not receiving any of the medication that was supposed to help me with the…

I was sightly afraid at that time, but I was still trying to reassure myself that because I was not wearing glasses, so all I could see was blurred. After that, my dad drove me to school. Although my surgery and recovery were successful, I would never lead a pain free life. My pain was not as severe, but it still remained a prominent part of me. I never cared about trampolines, but as I grew older I became obsessed with football. Pain or not, I really wanted to play…

The excitement I feel before I see him is like nothing I ever felt. The day was going by so slow and I could not wait any longer, so I left to pick him up. On the way there I could almost feel actual butterflies fluttering in my stomach. His name is Nick Massoni, complete with dirty blonde hair, bright blue eyes and pale Irish skin; he is the youngest of three handsome sons. He is a pleasure to be near and he can always turn my frown upside down. There he was running out of the house like the speed of light to my car because he was wearing a paper thin shirt and no jacket. He sat there shivering as cold as an ice cube in a freezer so I blasted the heat. After seeing him all of my nerves vanished and I felt my personality start to shine through the brick wall I carry around my self. I watched as Nick's facial expression changed to fright as I sang my little heart out, but that was nothing I did not expect from him.…
