The Taming of the Shrew
Specific Purpose: To discuss the three plots of The Taming of the Shrew. The three plots are the fooling of Sly, the wooing of Bianca, and the wooing of Katharine.
Central Idea: Serving to inform the audience that The Taming of The Shrew has three plots whereas most stories only have one. I also want to better inform the audience of the three main plots.
Introduction
I. From the "SPT-1113 List of Topics" I chose to discuss the three plots of Shakespeare's play, The Taming of the Shrew.
A. Did you realize that a story can have more than one plot?
B. The Taming of the Shrew actually has three plots.
II. I want to inform my audience of the three plots of The Taming of the Shrew. The three plots are the fooling of Sly, the wooing of Bianca, and the wooing of Katharine.
A. Sly is a drunk man who gets fooled by a lord in the Induction of The Taming of the Shrew.
B. Bianca is the younger sister of Katharine. Lucentio and Hortensio are trying to woo her into marrying one of them.
C. Katharine is a snappy, independent woman who will not tolerate a man that is not worth her time.
Body
I. In the Induction of The Taming of the Shrew, we are first introduced to a drunk beggar named Christopher Sly.
A. A lord comes up to find Sly outside of an alehouse. The lord then decides to pull a prank on Sly by taking him to his house and making him think that he is a lord when he wakes up.
B. Sly wakes up and refuses to believe anyone who tells him that he is a lord.
C. The Sparknotes Website points out that they put on quite a show with they're pleading and wailing in distress at his continued illness.
D. They then give him a "wife", and he starts to believe them. The real lord then hires actors to before a play for them, which is The Taming of the Shrew.
E. The Cliffnotes Website points out that there is a lot of disguising going on in this play.
