Why is September 16th Mexican Independence Day? What happened on that date? (Include in your answer a summary of two Catholic priests: Miguel Hidalgo and Jose Maria Morelos). Notably, September 16th is Mexican Independence Day because revolutionary activity was already a pattern throughout Mexico, “but the cause celebre of independence was El Grito de Dolores (The Cry of Pain), a proclamation made by Miguel Hidalgo, a parish priest, on September 16, 1810 (Vigil 112). Furthermore, Hidalgo was a Criollo, a Jesuit, and fairly well off, but most importantly he felt a concern for less-fortunate members of society, so he could be characterized as an activist puro (Vigil 112). Consequently, his goal was the liberation of Mexico, even if the gachupines…

Frederick Nietzsche once wrote that the “untruth, [or lie], is a condition of life.”At least in terms of creating a stable society, Socrates would seem to agree. In The Republic, Socrates points out that civilization is most prone to instability when founded on what he calls a“noble lie.”The lie which, despite its falsehood, serves for the good of society. His noble lie can be broken into two parts: a justification on why the lie applies to all of a society's members and a justification of the role each person serves in their society. Thus, if subjects believe in his noble lie, instability is abated because those who end up in the working class will be given simple reasoning for why they are where they are in society. That is to say, discontent will be diminished because the noble lie gives reasoning for why those in power are in power. The lie is noble in its attempt to achieve a greater good; however, the lie also contains truth due to the fact that, theoretically, it enables those who should be in power to be in power. The concept of the noble lie can be further expanded as its premise, a societal truth founded on a falsehood, can be applied to many different aspects of society. For instance, many people in the U.S. believe that America is a completely democratic country because that is the noble lie they are told, yet many aspects of American society, such as the disenfranchisement of felons, suggest just the opposite.…

In his book, The Birth of the Republic, Edmund S. Morgan puts forth an account of the quarter century span, from 1763-1789, in which the American Republic was born. This work provides a detailed description of what historians call “The Revolutionary Era” in American history. Morgan seems to be making the argument that while the revolution may have begun for economic reasons, and that the founding fathers may have stood to gain financially from it, it eventually became about more than just money and economics. The revolution became about the fight for equality of all men.…

I think that this fight between the Patricians and the Plebeians prompted the downfall of the Republic. Nobody was happy with their situation. The Patricians wanted to keep their power and not give anything up to other civilizations or even people of their own society. However, this created a lack of resources and opportunities for the Plebeians, who then caused turmoil for the Patricians. Their solution was to redistribute land and wealth to the poor people, but the lack of cooperation eventually led to the downfall of the system. There are many parallels between the Republic and today. Some people feel that they don’t have as much material things or rights as they deserve, so they protest against it, as did the Plebeians in the Republic. For instance, to bring money to the poor some people suggest that through taxes or whatever, money should be taken from those who are richer and used to help those who don’t have much money. We saw this in the textbook when people in the Republic wanted land from those who had a lot of land to be given to those who didn’t have any. Yet, just as it was in the Republic, today this is contested very strongly by people who believe that things should stay the same or another solution should be used.…

Patriot Day is the most important holiday of the year because on this day, not only do we remember the people that were killed in the worst terrorist attack on American soil, we also honor those who serve and have given their lives in the fight against terrorism. On September 11, 2001, four planes were hijacked; two of the planes hit the twin towers of the World Trade Center, one hit the Pentagon, and the other crashed in a field in Pennsylvania (https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/patriot-day/). Nearly 3,000 people were killed in this horrific attack. The attack was done by a radical Muslim organization called Al-Qaeda. This is a day we should never forget because this attack was not just against the people that were killed but against our entire country. There are many important holidays but this is the only one that has united all of America and captivated the entire nation as a whole. It is also a National Day of Service and Remembrance where people honor veterans, soldiers, or first responders by giving them donations, care packages and writing thank you letters for them (http://www.usa.gov/Citizen/Topics/History-American/September11.shtml). I can honestly say that everyone that I have ever talked to about what happened on 9/11 knows exactly where they were and what they were doing on this day. This holiday brought us together as a nation in a way that no other holiday does today.…

    President's Day

Today is February 19, 2012 and we are celebrating the President’s Day. This day was designated to honor all the presidents of the America. The most honored and respected two American presidents at that time were, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. George Washington’s birthday was on February 22, 1732 while Abraham Lincoln’s birthday was on February 12, 1809. Back then, Washington and Lincoln’s birthdays were celebrated separately, falling on their actual birthdays. However, the Congress soon passed a law saying that the holidays should all be celebrated on Mondays making it three-to-four-day weekends. Then the holiday was renamed to “President’s Day.” When people started to realize that it wasn’t very good for us to celebrate a day where it doesn’t fall on any of their birthdays, the conflict rose, and was brought back down. Many people were against the holiday’s renaming, since they believed not all the presidents should be respected or specially recognized. But, that too was brought down when most of the American states agreed on naming it “President’s Day.” Meantime, some people actually liked the fact that they could do longer sales with the attention of their viewers. Nowadays, we celebrate the wonderful holiday with delight. People bring out their grills, blast loud music, and have parties with families. This day is well-respected by many and there are numbers of sites you can visit to see and learn more about this specific holiday. Schools are out on this thankful holiday, and exaggerates the importance of these two wonderful leaders of America, George Washington and Abraham…

Election Day was November 6th, 2012! I wasn’t ready but I was ready. I was sitting in the living room with my mom and little brothers. We were flipping from Fox 13 to CNN. I was getting nervous and so were my brothers. I was on the edge of the couch, I kept closing my eyes and slickly opening them back up and biting my nails. It was a close race though.
