Does It Shape Society 's View of Femininity?

The question answers itself. Yes, the media definitely influences today 's society via

messages through the television, radio, magazines, and billboards. It seems that in today 's

day and age to even be "noticed" as a woman one must be tall, skinny, blonde, and countless other

things that the "average woman" could only hope for. Today, if one is not comfortable

with who or what they are, they may encounter many dilemmas. I found three convincing

reasons to support my claim: the rise of eating disorders throughout history, percentages

and statistics, and my own personal experience.

The Rise of Eating Disorders Throughout History

As far back as the 18th century, women began dieting. They submitted themselves to

food deprivation, enemas, and purging. In order to achieve that "hourglass" figure, some

women went as far as having their lower ribs surgically removed.(Collins 199) In the 1940s and '50s, full figure females were popularized by movie stars like Ava Gardner, Jane Russell, and

Marlyn Monroe, but they were, however, short lived. With the introduction of Playboy®,

Vogue®, and Cosmopolitan®, eating disorders have quickly taken over our society. The

great majority of American women are culturally conditioned to strive for a slender figure.

Advertising, television, films, and the fashion industry relentlessly drive home the

message, and women who don 't " naturally" fit the mold often respond by dieting or even

surgery.

Percentages and Statistics

According to the National Eating Disorders Association, " Media images that help to

create a cultural definition of beauty and attractiveness are often acknowledged as being

among those factors contributing to the rise of eating disorders"(165). Media messages

screaming "thin is in" may not cause eating disorders but help to create a context in which

    ABSTRACT For decades, there has been an immense misrepresentation of women in media. The women that are seen in magazines, on TV and on the big screen are, for the most part, unusually tall, slender and flawless. Talent agents are forever pushing their clients to lose weight, stressing that if they dont, they wont be taken seriously in the entertainment and modeling industries. This view of women is not only inaccurate, but also serves as unjust to the American female population. This paper examines the effect of the medias misrepresentation on women, their self-esteem, and their body image. It aims to prove that if it wasnt for media, physical health and psychological issues pertaining to self-image amongst females in our society would not be as prevalent. This paper explores past studies conducted by accredited scholars, in addition to developed theories in the Communications field. The results of my own personal survey are also incorporated. INTRODUCTION In todays world, it is almost never that we see an average American woman represented in the Mass Media as a beauty ideal. In the 1950s, women looked up to famous figures like curvy-figured actress, Sophia Loren. In the 1960s, women looked up to such icons as Marilyn Monroe, who wore a size fourteen. Today, a size zero is depicted as the norm. This years winner of Americas Next Top Model was 19 year-old Ann Ward, who is 62 and has a waist so small that two human hands fit around it (Yes, it was done on an episode). The problem with this depiction is that it is widely unattainable and unrealistic. Still, females from teens to women older in age, turn to images in advertisements to define how they should look. This growing trend that the media fosters is very harmful to a womans self- image, as well as to her self-esteem and to her sound mental state.     We are constantly surrounded and influenced by the media no matter where we go. With all of the great improvements the media has provided to our lives, it is hard to recognize how much the media has negatively impacted us as well. Media advertises body images that are deemed to be “perfect” which pressures individuals to change their appearance to meet the standards of society’s view of “perfection.” Not everyone can achieve self-satisfaction with his or her appearance. Body image is the mental image of one’s own body based on self-esteem.     We have all heard, “you are what you eat”; however, and maybe more importantly, you want to be what you watch or read. How does today’s advertising impact on your body image? The shaping of our concept of the ideal body image begins at a young age and continues though adulthood. It begins with our toys; that first Barbie you received on your sixth birthday; the one with the long blond flowing hair and the perfect curves that could wear any outfit. For instance the woman staring back at me on the latest Runner’s World cover is not necessary a stereotypical female runner. In fact, she portrays an image the average American will always fall short of. The fit blue eyed blond woman appears to be in her twenties. With carefully crafted make-up, professional lighting, and a talented photographer her face conveys exquisite beauty and strength. Her tied back hair; open stance and pleasant smile give her the girl next door look. Her well developed shoulders, fit abs and toned muscular legs attest to her fitness. For an instant I long to look like her. I think to myself if I can lose 5 pounds in four weeks like the magazine tag line reads it would be a great accomplishment; but even so, I could never look like the woman on the cover.
