Ariel has characteristics that make her similar to Sophia from the Apocryphon of John. Where Sophia was the last aeon created by the invisible spirit, Ariel maintains a similar position in her story by being the youngest daughter of king Triton (BJn p. 8, Layton 34). Throughout their stories, we see that both characters show a desire for an impossibility. Ariel wishes for a pair of legs that will enable her to live among humans while Sophia yearns to create (BJn p. 9, Layton 35). These two desires seem unrelated; however, they give both characters equally negative consequences once acquired. For both, it meant losing an ability to the villain. For both of these characters, that lost ability was related to light. As collateral for the legs the sea witch gave her, Ariel gave up her voice. As it was extracted from her, the film depicts it as a small ball of golden light. In the case of Sophia, it was her creation, Ialtabaoth that took her power. The text…

Many people think that mermaids are not real. They prove that since there is no evidence then there is no way mermaids are real. If sightings do occur they play it off as a manatee or a pod of dolphins. If were to think about it mermaids are told to move at fast paces as manatees kind of hover in one area not really moving much. Also manatees are “declared distinctly more minivan like than mermaid looking”(Sea Cow ‘sirens’ Fuel Mermaid Mythology). Mermaids also have been mistaken for sharks, but they do have roughly the same tail felling the structure is totally different plus mermaids don’t have a dorsal fin. That is another reason why people mistake mermaids for manatees. The only reason people have mistaken mermaids for dolphins is a recent…

For the young man, the sea increasingly welcomes him. While he had first imagined he was "going to start having nightmares once we get deep at sea," he instead dreams of dying and going to heaven and heaven is at the bottom of the sea. By the time the ship is about to sink, however, he knows he will "live life eternal, among the children of the deep blue sea, those who have escaped the chains of slavery." With these words he draws the link between Haitians under Duvalier's regime and the Africans who were forced from their homeland centuries ago. His speeches have hinted at this connection—"Yes, I am finally an African" because the sun has darkened his skin, the passengers go to the bathroom "the same way they did on those slave ships years ago"—but only when he has finally given himself to the idea of death does he accept that he has been "chosen" for this destiny because it is the only way to escape oppression. The sea is a vast, open space, and though it is far away from the young woman, they both 'know the sea is "endless like my love for…

Unfortunately, the sun set on the third day. This meant that Ariel now belonged to Ursula forever. But, King Triton stepped in. “To save his daughter, King Triton gave Ursula his great powers and became her prisoner” (Musker & Clements 13). I believe that King Triton is the heroic one in this fairytale because he was willing to give up his powers as king of the sea just to save his daughter that betrayed him in the first place. If anything, that is true love and not the blinded love Ariel felt for the prince. Of course, the story focuses more on Prince Eric saving Ariel by killing the sea-witch, Ursula. In the end, the Prince Eric and Ariel share true loves kiss and live happily ever after. But, the ending still leaves me questioning how true…

When interpreting The Little Mermaid from a feminist theory perspective, it becomes clear that a beauty of a female lies in her appearance and matters above all else. In the fairy-tale, the little mermaid falls in love with a prince, but she cannot be with him because he is human and she is not. The little mermaid cannot be with him until she makes the modifications needed to achieve her desired look, which is done by sacrificing what she had previously valued.…

The common person believes that the mermaid or aquatic humanoid is a mythical creature imagined and made up for story books and fairy tales. There are plenty of odd creatures we have discovered in the oceans, so why do people think so ridiculously of seamen believing they’ve seen a mermaid? Stranger things have happened; stranger creatures have been spotted and recognized as a new species, like the blobfish, loch ness monster, and the axolotl, yet the half-human, half-fish specimen are still believed to be mythical and are refused to be accepted into society as real.…
