The Ivory Coast
Lottie Heslop 7u Côte d’Ivoire Ivory Coast is located on the south coast of West Africa. It is bound by Liberia and Guinea to the west, Mali and Burkina Faso to the north, Ghana to the east and the Atlantic Ocean to the south. Côte d’Ivoire, also known as the Ivory Coast or officially the Republic of Côte d'Ivoire, is a country known for it's cocoa production. The exact coordinates are 6.8500° N, 5.3000° W. It's poulation is 20.6 million people. The southern Ivory Coast forest is a typical rain forest; it has a canopy at around 21–24 m, with isolated trees pushing up above 37 m. Farther north, the rain forest gives way to scattered deciduous trees, and mahogany is widespread. The jackal, hyena, panther, elephant, hippopotamus, numerous monkeys, and many other mammals are very common in this area. Crocodiles and chameleons, as well as venomous serpents (horned vipers, mambas, and many others) and pythons, are numerous. Among indigenous birds are vultures, cranes, pigeons, turtle doves, parrots, and herons. Venomous spiders and scorpions thrive. As of 2002, there were at least 230 species of mammals, 252 species of birds, and over 3,600 species of plants throughout the country. Commercial agriculture employs over half the labour force in Ivory Coast; over a quarter (around 6 million Ivorians) are involved in growing cocoa beans (the country’s main export). Coffee and cotton producers also employ many workers. Coconut, palm and pineapples are increasingly important in employment terms. These crops provide jobs in processing plants (producing palm and coconut oils and soap) and canning facilities. The capital of the Ivory Coast is Yamoussoukro and the largest cities, in order of ranking in size, are: Abidjan, Abobo, Bouaké, Daloa, San-Pédro, Yamoussoukro, Korhogo, Man, Divo and Gagnoa. In countries like Burkina Faso, Ghana, Togo, and Mali children are sent away from their families to cocoa farms in exchange for promised money and other useful items for their family. Families will “send their children to work”, or basically sell, them for promised goods that are usually never received. Even though it is not slavery, there are still many moral problems with the cocoa farming. The children work long hours, in dangerous conditions, for usually nothing more than a bed to sleep in and minimal food to eat. Children from these poor countries are sent to The Ivory Coast in search of skills that will help them in life or help their family, but most of the time they are just taken advantage of. Cocoa farming in The Ivory coast is morally and ethically wrong because the children are taken advantage of and they are forced into a type of “slavery”…

The demand of chocolate has been increasing. To keep up in places like the Cote d’Ivoire 74 percent of the supposedly protected forests the researchers surveyed had been taken over by cocoa farms(Document D). These forests are supposed to be protected by the government, but instead they are being destroyed. In the Africa is a place where many flora and fauna are diverse and unique to that area. These changes can have drastic effects. As stated in document D “the forests are mostly gone and the monkeys that they once held aren’t far behind. Several species have been critically endangered. One may now be extinct.” Forest and animals are what makes a place beautiful. Also by killing a species off it can disrupt the food cane. Due to deforestation the Cote d’Ivoire only has about 2% of the ancient forests left these environments house around 4,700 plant species and about 1,000 animals (Our Africa). If these species are destroyed not only would it be sad, but Cote d’Ivoire ecosystem would be destroyed as well. Forest, animals, and people work together to create a balance and when that balance is disturbed it affects every party negatively. By destroying one thing it has profound affect on things you never knew could happen. By trying to make a quick buck off planting cocoa. Their actions have taken a toll on the environment and if they don’t stop now there may not be any…

Passion is known as the strong emotion that motivates us to move beyond our comfort zones to achieve the potential that resides within us. Passion is a powerful driving force. Reason is the capacity of conciencely making sense of things also known as logic. Reason or logic, is the foundation of rationality. The real question is, does passion and emotion overcome the logic behind people's concience? Precisely. Daniel Golman, the author of Emotional Intelligence, once stated," Imagine placing a plank of wood on the ground and walking it's length a few times. It is easy enough. But suppose you placed it a hundred feet in the air between two buildings. You know you can walk the plank. You did it over and over again. Yet now the emotion kicks in. The what-ifs and unconcience mind supercede the concrete knowedge of your ability to walk the plank. At the end, you don't walk." Emotion has the ability to overcome reasoning, because it brings fear, memories, close-ties to the situation, and the famous what-ifs a.k.a, doubt. Bringing those forces, can cause anyone to collapse, and follow the leader, the one who could conquer what was suppose to make sense, leaving people in perplexity and doubtful of their own reactions and thoughts. Plus, it emotion takes less effort. So yes, emotion does overcome logic and reason. The overcoming of emotion is intense and very common, leaving prints all over history, in literature, but the best way to actually understand is to experience it on your own, and that's exactly what I did.…

Central Africa has been inhabited by people for over 8000 years. The population of the early Africans remained low because of a limited food supply. As they started to have more advanced farming the population grew. In the 15th and 16th century Europeans started to make written records of what was happening in Central Africa. The first really significant form of outsider interference in the country started when the Arab slave trade began in the 1600s. It lasted until the late 19th century. The next significant form of outsider interference was foreign control of the country through imperialism and, today, foreign influence through foreign aid and trade (O'Toole, T. 1941).…
