The Hope Dealer Analysis
No one other than ourselves determines our outcomes as individuals, that is my impression of Mr. Bates’ presentation “The Hope Dealer”. Having a childhood and parents similar to his, striving to improve the life we can no control over with the one we now do. The aspects of a person’s life are not entirely determined by the circumstances he is born into – his decisions, the actions of others, and luck plays a large role as well. Since people are autonomous, they control how their lives turn out, but everyone’s life prospects are more “deeply shaped by a social structure that he or she did not choose” (page 130). This means that the poor are not entirely at fault for their living conditions; society’s structure may also affect their life outcomes. Not every citizen is granted equal opportunities, so not everyone should have the same social…

In Malcolm Gladwell’s The Outliers, his goal is to convince the reader that “people don’t rise from nothing” and that “ we do owe something to parentage and patronage.” Although certain people’s success requires prerequisites of talent and knowledge. I agree with Gladwell that it is not solely because of these talents that these people are successful. However, their success most often is dependant on one’s past good fortune. For example, when or where one was born and raised, one’s cultural background and family legacies, one’s schooling, and many other factors, create opportunities for success where these talents can be utilized. Although some people are thought to have risen from nothing or to have gone from rags to riches, the fact is no one is capable of creating their own success without the help of others and good fortunes along the way.…

Thornton Wilder’s Our Town, reflects on the idea of, everything happens for a reason, but entirely it is based on what people set aside to do in situations, that will affect their lives based on their decisions. This can be a relatable inference in Our Town and in today’s society, because our loved ones can also influence our perspective on what direction to take in life. However I am fixated on the precedent of people can impact their own outcomes.…

A four year college degree is important because of the environment we live in. Having a college degree in my perspective means success and prestige in terms of getting a job because of the competitive nature of our society. A college degree is like a certificate that one must obtain to be eligible for a certain job position. For example, if someone wants to work in a restaurant, they would want to have on-the-job experience or a food handler’s certificate to give them an edge above other applicants. This way there are more opportunities to explore. The same thing applies to obtaining a degree in the field that you are interested in. College to me at this moment is an adventure. Some people might succeed in life without a college degree. However, I agree that college is beneficial. What I have learned in college so far has already opened my mind to some of life's realities and new perspectives. With the system that is in place throughout your first 13 years of school, you do not really learn about the role you play in the world. Memorization and facts are valued over critical thinking and evaluation. In college, you really learn how to use your mind to critically look at the world and question things. In simple words, college makes you aware and that is something that is extremely important in life. You also get the chance to interact with professionals in the field of your choice which gives you connections. College gives you the tools necessary for a better life. Knowledge and awareness betters a persons mind and being, but mixed with connections and a degree, it can pave a road to…
