Imagine someone being 17 years old with a few months left until high school graduation and on their own with the future to think about; that person was me. I decided that I was going to wait a couple of years before I went back to school and I really wish that I wouldn’t have. If I wouldn’t have waited, I would already be done with my degree and making good money. Students should attend college immediately after high school to better their education, achieve independence, and earn higher wages.…
Chris Kelly’s article, “Viewpoint: Gap years are good for students –and for schools” published in USA Today offers countless examples as to why taking a year off before college is beneficial for students. Kelly starts the article by using former president Barack Obama’s daughter, Malia Obama, as an example of a great student taking a year before college to get herself ready for the next stage of her life. He continues his claim by expressing that while in the past colleges have frowned upon taking a gap year, colleges today are actually suggesting students to take a constructive year off to get themselves mentally and physically ready before attending a university. Colleges believe students who do this come to college more ready to succeed…
In the United States, the school systems are operated on a 10-month program. Unfortunately, not everyone agrees that the 10-month system is efficient for every student. Many believe that the only way to get results from students is for them to be in school for a longer period of time. Having a year-round system, schools are in session for 180 days within the year and have shorter breaks. Allowing for students to be in a school environment for a longer period of time allows for an increase in retention rates. When students have longer breaks in the winter, spring, and summer, they tend to forget lessons and key concepts on what they learned in school. In Among…
First, if you get lots of breaks during the year, Why not do year-round school? It also helps you because with summer when you get back to school after summer you are still in the summer mood so your not getting the things done that you usually would and that leads to bad grades on testes and quizzes witch ultimately leads to having bad grades on your report card and what people are trying to do is to have that not happen to you by having year-round school.…
Having multiple breaks during the school year would actually benefit the students by quite a bit. Most students get exhausted about how long they have until the next break, but in year-round school the students can take rest their brains with all these breaks. The students will not become as stressed with all the long, hard working days. This also gives time for one to refresh their brain. Not only will these breaks…
Throughout time education has been considered a process that every so often must be improved. The education quality in the U.S. has declined over the years and people have been looking for a way to make improvements. A more recent proposal has been to go from a traditional nine month schedule to an all year program. Supporters of year round school claim it gives the student a better education. However, the prospect of year round school is not beneficial to the taxpayers pocket, to the education a student receives, or to the people involved with the district.…
Joining a year round school allows students to learn more information at an accelerated rate. Studies have shown that students are more likely to forget important information over summer break than they are to forget over a short break that year-round schools offer (Yeager).…
America needs solutions immediately because the gap represents its future leaders of tomorrow. If nothing is done soon to correct the disturbing trend, the United States will be in danger of falling even further behind other developed countries. The many challenges are frightening: (1) too many high school students quit school before graduation, (2) too many high school students graduate without the ability to read or write well, (3) too many high school students are not prepared for the workforce, and (4) too many high school students are not prepared for college. In this short essay, the writer will explain some of the consequences, causes and possible solutions for America’s educational…
For some parents the thought of their children attending year round school scares them. Parents do not want their children doing year round school because they are afraid they will not see their children very often. Even though the parents of some students are scared they will not see their child as much, they do not realize that the 3 week breaks after each 9 weeks of school really do benefit the students and it helps them to refresh their minds. It keeps them on track with the pace of their learning as…
Students with year-round schooling get more frequent breaks. The most common way of year-round schooling is going to school for 45 days and then take a 15-day break. This shows that the year-round calendar would give students more breaks throughout the year. This also shows that students won’t…
It’s been a lot of talk about school being year around. I for one think school is a great place to be, because without it we wouldn’t be able to do anything without an education. Children in this day and time need education to make it in the work force. Many people say school should be year round; because it will cut the cost and others think that school shouldn’t it will be more scheduling conflict. The children would get tired of going and not having holidays, summers, and any other kind of break.…
In the United States, 60% of high school teachers feel that school should go year round with intermediate breaks. When school starts again in mid August, students have just gotten back from summer vacation, and have forgotten the material learned the year before. This a problem for teachers when they begin to teach new things that students need last year's information for. Some teachers have suggested that summer break should be shortened and other breaks should be longer so that students have less time to forget content. Parents and students argue that students need time in the summer more than other times because that is more convenient to them. Parents have certain dates they can be off, so having a longer time in somer…
College is a daunting subject for students everywhere. From the moment middle schoolers move on into high school, graduating is the sole widespread focus, and the question of “what will you do afterwards?” begins to be asked. Though many may take a gap year, others will begin to work or continue to work their high school jobs, almost all students will have the same debate: whether they will go to college or not. This has been an ongoing topic for generations, and the variance of opinions regarding college attendance are incredibly diverse, spanning from some people thinking that it’s useless and causes needless debt, to others who think it’s an absolute necessity and good jobs cannot be acquired without it. However, due to the complex and varied debate subject, one must first understand the basis it has stemmed from.…
Year-round school would be beneficial because it helps eliminate the loss of academic information. Twelve-month school would help in “Eliminating any sort of long break from school can improve a child’s academic achievement” (Kimberly). Over summer children tend to forget what they have learned. If children do not have a long break they are more likely to not forget the majority of the things they learned. This is not only beneficial to the student, but it is beneficial to the teacher because not as much review time is needed.…
What is your opinion on year-round schooling? Numerous schools throughout the world are considering or have already given up summer break in order to have school all year round. Some people think this is a good idea, however, I disagree completely. Year-round schooling is a dreadful idea because there will be less time for family, school systems will have to pay more money throughout the year, and students will have a new outlook on his or her life.…
