The Apprentice

In this film, the task for the men and women competing to work for Donald Trump was to sell ice cream bars. The objective of the task was whichever group made the most profit from selling the ice cream bars wins, and will be safe from elimination. The teams were split up into two groups of all men and all women’s team. For the men’s group, the team leader had experience in sales and was really confident that he was going to lead his group to victory. On the other hand, the all women’s group leader had no experience what so ever in sales, and wasn’t sure how she would lead her group to success. The guy’s team started off with really good communication towards one another and quickly agreed on a location and sales strategy that they were going to use in order to win. But once they got to their location, the sales strategy didn’t quite work out, and each person had their own way of selling the ice cream bars. The leader then took the lead in telling his teammates how they should be selling the bars in a more orderly fashion way. One group member suggested a costume that they could all wear to look more uniformed and as a unit. They also used signs, charm, looks, and bribes to get people’s attention to buy ice cream bars from them as their sales strategy. Their main advantage above the girls was that they are more aggressive and the amount of energy they used to get people to buy their ice cream bars. They also had really good teamwork within their group, so things functioned really well. As for the girl’s team, they started off with excellent communication towards one another. They established a location leader and a sales leader to help manage the task. But as they started, they ran into some problems with a member over stepping the group leader in making decisions. They also ran into a problem with the pricing of each ice cream bar as to whether or not the price is at $3 or $5. They even lost some customers that way. The first

The original stage of team building is the forming stage. In this stage our group was not exactly sure what this project would entail and what work was ahead of us. We were all polite and on our best behavior making contact with the rest of the group. There was a positive and high expectation that we would be successful and develop an outstanding service learning project. In this stage our roles were not clearly defined. This lead to us mostly working independently and gaining an understanding for the project and what to expect for ourselves.…

The team was ineffective during the quiz night when some of the team members were not doing anything to help or were not doing their tasks in the event. An example of this was when some tea members were on their phone during the event in front of the guests which I thought was unprofessional and when the camera man left the video camera and the camera unattended.…

Effective team are important, and their functions crucial to their success. I have found that clear goals, relaxed environment, open communication, and freedom to express ideas and feelings are great ways to ensure success. In the video “Helping Annie”, the dynamics of the team were lost due to lack of information, who was right and who could be trustworthy. When team members meet, they should feel as though they blend in with the group. They should feel a commitment to the goals and achievements to the group. What I know about groups are, that having valued diversity, defined roles, balanced participation, and cooperative relationships help with moving the group to a positive outcome. As a participative leader, as it is said in our eBook Working In Groups, “there is a balance of primary roles and when team members know their roles, work to their strengths, and actively manage weaknesses.” (Engleberg, 2013, p. 55).…

The Ice Cream Division of Chattanooga Food Corporation had shown declining sales for 5 consecutive years through 1996. That was the year that they lost their third largest customer, Stay & Shop. A turn around had to take place but the Ice Cream Division leadership was unsure how to accomplish this. The division was run by Charlie Moore, grandson of the company founder. Charlie was a very democratic leader but had major issues controlling and leading his team of vice presidents. The team was very dysfunctional considering they did not trust each other, had open conflict that was often malicious and mostly unproductive, a very apparent lack of commitment to work with each other, and the biggest issue appears to be avoidance of accountability. Moore had to get his team on the same page and quickly. Each management team member has their own issue with the other team members. Moore needs to publicly put the loss of Stay & Shop in the past and let everyone on the team know that it is all of their responsibilities to get together and become a functional team to make sure that no other business is lost. He needs to leverage this as an opportunity to finally build his team in a way that functions as needed but also in a way that he can ultimately manage in a style he is comfortable with. This paper will examine the problems with the team and propose how Moore can get this accomplished.…

This case study is focused on a company called Vigor Skin Care. Initially known as the “sleeping dog,” Vigor was barely raking in a profit during its initial years of development. However four years ago, Peter Markles, the current head of Vigor, accepted the challenge of reviving the company. Markles first step in solving this problem was forming a team whose members were committed towards achieving a common goal; bringing success to Vigor. In addition to Markles, Sandy Fryda, Vigor’s marketing director, and Josh Bartola, a creative entrepreneur at Vigor, became the constituents of “Fearsome Threesome.” All three members contributed to the team in different ways. Markles was the overseer of all the operations while Fryda helped them avoid lawsuits and other potential issues from corporate headquarters, and Josh continuously worked on new product ideas. Each member brought his/her strength to the team, which enabled them to take the company to new heights. Through their hard work and commitment over four years they were able to establish a new product line called “Ageless Vigor.” The success of this line enabled them to earn profits and eventually receive the Companies highest award of performance. However, Vigor’s success is quickly coming to a stop. These last two months Vigor has not been performing and the Fearsome Threesome has encountered numerous unanticipated problems. These setbacks include one of their products being out of stock for three weeks, higher actual costs and slower production for their new product, and lastly issues with suppliers and quality controls. The central issue, however, is that the Fearsome Threesome team itself has lost its momentum. Bartola is becoming more interested in developing products for other companies and is therefore investing less time expanding Vigor. Fryda on the other hand is burnt out from working long hours these past four years and is having difficulty accomplishing tasks in a timely manner. The resulting problems…
