The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens
Personal Experience The novel, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens, can relate to me in multiple ways. One of my many shared experiences to the book is when the author states in the book that when he was a boy he played football, just like I do. He wasn’t the greatest at the sport for a few reasons; one being he was small and another was that he was slow. You see, I was never the one to be slow, but small, however, I was. I have been playing football for a good eight years now, and to myself I believe that I am fantastic at the sport, but when I first started, I was the complete opposite. My first year of football was and is always the easiest year to remember for me because it was the toughest. I was only a small boy playing with boys that looked upon me with the eyes of a shark, fresh meat, that’s all I was to them. I knew it also, and I knew I had to step it up and that’s exactly what I did. I practiced daily, I learned the sport from the best, and I also used techniques to make me bigger and stronger than I was. When the first year of football was over, I had other coaches scouting me out. I had become the star of the football team. The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens novel stated that, “If you want to succeed whether it be sports or academics, all you need to do is want it bad enough.” That is exactly what I did and I am proud of it because, today I stand at six foot two and captain of the North freshman football team.

Piece of literature

I have decided to relate this novel to another novel very similar which is called “Ned’s declassified.” I used to read this book when I was just a young boy. This book is very similar to this novel because they are both wrapped around one message, and the message is to help students strive. Every chapter would be different, another chapter would be about how to pass social studies and the other would be on how to not be late to class. Both of these pieces of literature are very alike, not only because they

In the short story “Becoming a Student Athlete”, Terry Telphy discusses some of the issues he encountered during his Freshman year in high school. He had a problem balancing being a great student and being a phenomenal athlete. He proudly revealed he excelled as a football player by committing extra time and effort to make sure he would make the team and be an impact player on the field. The summer before entering 9th grade, obviously he could balance the heavy load of being an athlete, but when the semester started and homework started piling up, he no longer could put all of his effort into sports and little into school. Terry wanted great things to happen in his life — He wanted to graduate high school, go to college, and did not want to…

Growing up, my siblings and I participated in a variety of competitive sports. For my brother and me, this consisted of soccer, basketball, and running track. We would constantly practice together and would make every aspect of it a competition. For example, whoever was breathing hardest at the end of a sprint lost, whoever shot more goals in soccer won, and whoever could dodge and fake out the other was the best athlete in the family. I would try and try to beat my brother but he always found a way to get the upper hand. Compared to my brother, I saw myself as a failure. It wasn’t until one parent teacher conference night that i realized that I was far more academically capable than my older brother. I had better grades and was more well liked…

Think if you were in a football game, and you think the other guy is better the you,and you just keep thinking that. Then you should change your mindset.“People with all levels of ability can hold either mindset, but over time those with the growth mindset appear to gain the advantage and begin to outperform their peers with a fixed mindset “(Dweck). This quotation proves that playing football with a growth mindset is good for you. With a growth mindset you think anything is possible.Athletes need to understand the importance of mindset in their sport by having a growth mindset, being successful, and playing multiple sports, because these actions will make them better.…

The day of the eighth grade promotion was filled with mixed emotions. I was very nervous but also excited to be leaving middle school. I was mostly nervous because I would have to walk up onto the stage in front of over a hundred people. I didn’t want to go because of how nervous I was. The school day was uneventful. We went over what we were supposed to do in the gym multiple times. Even though the day was boring and uneventful, I was nervous the entire school day. In The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens, Sean Covey states, “Putting first things first also deals with learning to overcome your fears and being strong during hard moments” (Covey 106). In order to overcome my fear and stay strong I had to put first things first. I was worrying…

The reasons for this can vary, from parents wishing to live out their own athletic dreams through their children, to hoping their child can reach an elite level and gain college scholarships. However, this type of mentality must be abolished. Intense year round training doesn’t make a star player, and studies have shown that “less than 1% of young athletes 6 to 17 years of age achieve elite status” (Jayanthi, Neeru et al.). Yet, despite the slim chance, a child athlete will actually make it to professional leagues, this discourages few (“Intensive Training” 1). These kind of stakes only up the ante for young athletes, who are then held to a higher standard than their athletic idols ever were.…

I began playing football when I was eight years old. From the moment, I first stepped on the field for practice I knew that I loved this game. I was a little four-foot-nothing kid tackling, blocking, and learning plays all while barely being able to see out of my helmet let alone over the other players. I was always the smallest player on the team and everyone called me “squirt.” What I didn’t have in size I made up for with my speed, determination and heart. Even though I was the smallest player on the team I was quick and strong enough to play quarterback on offense and cornerback on defense. Being the fastest player on the team, I could outrun every player at practice, run seventy five plays, and still be able to go home after practice and play more football.…

A point that Kohn attempts to hammer into our minds is the narrative that failure in its essence is almost always harmful. In addition, Kohn ties that notion into failure within youth sports. Despite this, we shouldn’t see failure as an entirely harmful process. Kohn doesn’t attest to the fact that many,…

I stood on the sidelines of my first varsity football game as a sophomore, not quite expecting what happened next. “We need another linebacker!” I heard this knowing I was the next man up, and was forced into a situation I wasn’t quite ready for. I started the rest of the season as our middle linebacker, and I got destroyed. Slow, undersized, and unprepared, I was out of my league. But I was determined not to let my sub-par sophomore year affect the rest of my high-school career as a football player.…

One lesson I learned, and arguably one of the most important lessons I ever learned is that no one can ever fault you for trying, for giving effort. When I found out I was the third stringer I had no clue what my future held or what was the next step for me. I couldn’t really think of any other option than to try my hardest at every opportunity that presented itself. I would take the small amount reps I got at practice and made the most of them. I would do extra footwork drills in the time that was given for us to rest. I watched films until the point that I thought my computer would over heat. I did these things because I realized at the time, that no matter how my future turned out, all anybody could ever ask for is effort. I knew that if I gave it everything I got, regardless whether I earned a starting spot or never played a down of football in my high school career, that my friends would respect…

For a long time in my life, I thought I was just adequate. I was smart, but not the smartest. I was good at softball, but not the greatest. I was decent at volleyball and basketball, but my height made it hard to be a formidable force. I was fast, but never the fastest. It truly seemed that I was just never meant to be outstanding in any way, shape, or form. In fact, being the shortest of my grade was the only “wow” factor about me. One event, or shall I say sport, changed that all, though. A sport that many people shy away from is the one I embrace with open arms. I am talking about the sport of powerlifting.…
