Introduction

Ladies and gentlemen!

Welcome. I would like to thank all of you, for attending to this conference. As many of you may know, I am Sir Terry Leahy. I am the CEO of Tesco, the third largest retail company in the world. We are gathered here today to talk about the future and the increasing growth in retail businesses. Many years of experience and research in Tesco has given us an insight of the retail markets and consumer habits, and therefore we would like to share our point of view in the retail market. Our agenda for today is as following: I will be developing three main points. In the first part, I will talk about the development of retailing. Secondly we will talk about the green consumerism. Finally I will discuss consumer’s future shopping habits. At last I will answer any questions regarding any particular subject.

Development of retailing

Our access to retail stores has not always been quick and easy. People tend to forget that it has not always been like this. The development of large retail outlets has increased enormously for the last decade. Before Tesco, retailing was only a post-war experiment, which never managed to succeed, and they had an inability to show the masses what they stood for. The local retail shops could be convenient, but quite expensive. Most of people’s disposable income went on food shopping. And with the already low disposable income back then, this became a major concern for the consumers. Back in the days, people used to spend several hours on shopping, because of the local shops inability to provide products for all of the customers needs and demands. . But today shopping is a lot easier. Today we have many possibilities for shopping, with almost an endless range of various products to reasonable prices. And therefore, the retailing market has seen a tremendous growth in the last decade. An example to this, is Tesco. Tesco has reached great success, and has become the third largest

The U.K. grocery market is highly diverse, with a wide range of formats, from convenience stores to hypermarkets, warehouse clubs and online stores. The market is currently led by five grocers (Tesco, Sainsbury, Wal-Mart‘s Asda, Morrisons and Cooperative Group), accounting for almost 55% of grocery retail banner sales, while the remaining 45% is attributed to hundreds of outlets scattered throughout the country (Planet Retail). Over the years, large players have continued to expand, both in terms of size, product range and services, increasingly taking market share from their smaller competitors.…

    | I always shopped at Morrisons even after the revamp. The fresh prepared fruit had gone up from £1 to £1.25 and the ‘restaurant pizzas’ were 3 for £2: 50 the week before, but are now 3 for £ 3.00 so I went to Tesco and was surprised at the offers and they gave me £12 voucher off my next shop, when I spend £60. So, I am not going to shop at Morrisons.Again, a recent poll by Sun City “Morri-Poll” reveals the supermarket’s customers are fed up with posh displays such as “misty” exotic vegetables and delis. As one customer, who shopped in Morrisons since 1965 has stopped shopping in the supermarket, while a staff claimed that “I’ve worked for Morrisons for the last six years and the last 16 months have been the worst.” Such type of comments about a supermarket is particularly dangerous, given a study conducted in 1999 by customer service research firm TARP shows that: * One unhappy customer tells ten people about their experience. Each of these ten people tells another five people, meaning up to 50 people get to know of one person's poor experience with a firm. * central-e-commerce unfolds that a dissatisfied consumer will tell between 9 and 15 people about their experience. About 13% of dissatisfied customers will even tell more than 20 people!…

There are indications that these changes are affecting the way people shop, as over time the number of people using the independent shops can been seen to reduce, whereas those going into the superstores can be seen to increase. Stock level and choice available in the independent stores are dropping, as owners reduce non essential items to maintain a liveable profit margin, consequently fewer people are using the independent shops; resulting in an ever increasing circle of change and inequality, for both store owners and shoppers.…

Supermarket brands provide people with a wide variety of options for meeting their shopping needs, with not only the specific types of products and goods offered, but by the unique level of quality and service to which those goods and services reach the minds of consumers. In the early 20th century all the retailers were small independent businesses, which occupied the ground floor areas of residential buildings. From the end of World War 1 (1918) and to the 1960’s there was a growth in national chains leading to shops with corporal designs. This progressed to specific pedestrianized areas and indoor shopping until the 1980’s. From then 1980’s onwards the development of out of town shopping centres has been prominent.…
