Tardiness and Absences in the work place
Tardiness and Absences in the Work Place

Being late or absent can affect you in many ways, especially in the work place. Consequences such as being suspended, laid off, vacation days taken away, hours from your shift being docked, going without pay, and missing deadlines can occur along with missing opportunities to better yourself. In any job you have there will always be chances of getting a pay raise, a promotion, or expanding the business; opportunities normally do not come to those who cannot be relied on. In this paper I will be discussing how being late or absent can get you put in some rather sticky situations along with tips to help avoid these issues. First hand I have witnessed people lose their jobs due to being late or asking for too many days off work. My family owns McGhin’s Southern Pit BBQ, a restaurant here in griffin; I have grown up there my entire life. Their policy dealing with lateness and absences consist of having three warnings which they call write-ups. The first offense is simply a verbal warning, second offense includes three days suspension with no pay, on the third offense your shift will be cut drastically for a month period of time. If the issue occurs after these three steps have been taken you will no longer have a job. There has been many unfortunate situations where employees have lost their jobs due to not being responsible enough to get themselves to work on time, or to come in at all. Now for just a moment think about this, those punishments occurred in a small town, family owned business, imagine if you worked for a larger business or corporation, your consequences may differ depending where you work. No matter what your job is you should come prepared and on time. When you first apply for the job you are interested in would you wear dirty clothes or have bad breath? Probably not, neither of those qualities will help build a good

It seemed to me that from the employers point of view they feel they are better than their employees and can do nothing wrong. In the article, "Rules of a Factory in Berlin," the first rule states that if an employee is two minutes or more late to work that person will not be able to work until the breakfast break, or the preceding break, is over; or they can work unpaid until then. Also if an employee is late by less than two minutes that employee will lose a half an hour's wages. To me these consequences seem too extensive because the employees are underpaid for the amount of work they do as it is. It is one thing to punish a worker for showing up late to work, but to take away a half an hour of his or her wages seems to extensive for me. These people worked eleven-hour days. A half an hour does not seem like too much time when someone works for that many hours each day, but the employees were working for almost nothing. After reading only the first rule I noticed that employers assume that they can set these kinds of rules,…

A typical work day at the arboretum begins at 7:00 a.m, although the boss does not show up until 7:20 a.m on an average day because he never accounts for the time it takes to get his Starbucks coffee and bagel-breakfast sandwich from Panera every morning. Surely because of his constant tardiness one could assume that he would understand a worker being a few minutes late occasionally, but no. If the boss does show up on time, which he does from time to time, and a worker is not there by 7:00 a.m sharp, not only will he write the worker up for being late, he will also be a jerk about it and remind them of all the mistakes they have been making recently while on the job. Although in his job description he is to inform and guide us through our work, he doesn't. Instead he sits in his office, reads the paper, and drinks his stupid, foofy, girly coffee which that adds to the putrid aroma of his unbrushed teeth.…
