Taking Things For Granted
It is true that we do not recognize the importance of an object until it is taken away from us. We, as human beings, have a natural tendency to overlook the little things in life, but when taken from us, these little things prove to have a strong emotional attachment. I have experienced this in my life.
Last year, my family and I moved to a new house in xxxxxxx, xxx xxxxx. We moved from xxxxxx, xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx, where we had lived for sixteen years. I had never really given thought to my house; it was always there when I left for school and when I came back. However, permanently moving away opened my eyes to the importance of the house. This house was my home; where I took my first steps, first spoke, and where I grew up. Leaving my house put a hole in my heart; I had never noticed how fond of it I was until I left.
Now, I always reminisce of the old house. My new house is bigger, but it is not home. I always compare the two houses. I miss the open backyard, the quiet neighborhood, and my friends. Growing up, I never really appreciated the house and all of its wonders. I just took it for granted. Now, being from the house, feels like a prolonged vacation.
Everybody tends to take things for granted in life. It is just in our nature. However, when we overlook things in life, we do not appreciate what it means to us and how much we need it in our life. Looking back, I can say that there are many more things in life that I overlook and take for granted. We should start enjoying the little things in life, that is the only way we can live happily and regretfully.

For seventeen years, I called it home. For seventeen years I lived a life surrounded by adoring family members. Now, this is all a distant memory. It was the house in which my life became estranged: trying to hide from the realms of reality while escaping into the fantasy in which I belonged. Now, each time I picture it, it taunts me. It has become a house that beholds my true nightmares……

When I was a little girl I use to always go to the park and while swinging I would imagine how much cooler it would be to live in a big city with lots of people and many things to see and experience. I never would have thought that at my age I would be sitting and relishing all the amazing times I had in my small home town. The family traditions, slow living and many childhood memories hold my heart in my hometown of Norfolk Nebraska. The boldly colored green grass, light brown cat tails lining the lake shore and fishing poles hanging off a dock all are vivid in my mind when thinking about the weekends I experienced in my adolescence.…

When I was seven years old and almost a half my parents told me that my family was going to pack up everything, leave our home, our livelihood, and move to Idaho. I was young but I knew I was going to miss Albuquerque. I was going to miss the plump quails who walked quickly with their babies toddling behind in a straight line and the skinny, all leg, roadrunners who would sprint across the roads. I was going to miss my little Crocodile Smile green room. I had chosen the paint color, I had watched my room be painted, and I had to leave it. Abandoning my home was hard too. The front of my seashell white house had two, big, high, arched windows. They had rusty yellow stains running down beneath them that made the house look like it was crying golden tears. Near the grand maroon oak front door were some slightly overgrown, prickly rose bushes. Everyday the roses blushed and smiled at me, turning their pink and yellow faces up. I was mortified to leave my crying house with the smiling roses. The day we left, I found out we were leaving. I had convinced myself that we weren’t going to leave, but then we did. I left my home, my friends, but mostly my memories. My memories included early morning balloon fiestas, during…

Going to Ted’s fishing station and taking the boat out, the beautiful beaches that surrounded the pensillia, giving my first dog paddington away to a neighbor, leaving my best and only friend Jack Gilmore behind. I have actually only seen him once since I left New York. It was hard transitioning to all theses new changes in my life and at the time I didn’t know it, but this was the foundation for a lesson I’ve learned over the years. That lesson is to cherish what you have, because any day that can drastically change. Change, is a misunderstood concept in the life of a human being. It is always present, and can take many different shapes. Sometimes it’s for the good and sometimes it’s for the worse. The only combatant against change is acceptance, to have open arms to new things, or to keep swimming through the tough…

I still couldn't believe we moved out Dallas into San Antonio. It would still take some time for me to process this astonishing change in my life. Now and then I would dwell on the memories I had with my friends in Dallas. I'd never moved to any place before I was accustomed to being in the same old place, seeing the same people, and doing the same old thing. Moving to San Antonio was one of the biggest I had as an eleven-year-old. Once we had unloaded everything from the U-Haul truck, I was very exhausted. Moving was a tiring job, we couldn't afford to hire movers, so we all had to help with moving everything into the new apartment. I always tried to carry the heaviest things because I still wanted to prove to my mom and sister that I was the man of the…

“What?!?” I blurted out promptly after my parents delivered the news. They just informed my siblings and I that we were going to be moving. Not just to somewhere nearby, either; to a different city or a neighboring state. We were going to be moving from our house in Virginia, all the way across the country, to Washington state. That is when I realized that my whole life that I had known was going to be gone. Life as I knew it was going to inevitably end.…

We had to say our last goodbye to our little house we had lived in our whole lives. When we were leaving, my family and relatives were at the house saying their goodbyes and giving hugs. “Do we really have to leave everyone and move, mom?” I asked. “Your dad and I have agreed that it will be a good move for the family, now stop complaining about it.” she told me. The only thing I wanted to do that day was stay in our old house and cry because I didn’t want to leave my family at all, I was really dreading moving to Florida. When we headed off on the roads I was still upset about the move, but my parents kept telling me it will be okay but that didn’t help me feel any…

The building I used to live in was beautiful safe and since it was a bit old everyone knew each other. I lived there for 6 years so I considered everyone there my distant family. We all did our laundry at the same Laundromat, shopped for groceries at the same place and most of the kids went to the same school in the neighborhood. I didn’t appreciate the door man in my building who would be there every day all the time to help me with the door or packages, the elderly Liberian who used to watch after me at the library I grew up at as a child, My neighbors borrowing me items I was so too lazy to go buy myself I didn’t appreciate the train being so close to me, the friendly man at the super market, Or My building and all it meant to me. But after my house burned down on July 26 I appreciated it all.…

Taking things for granted is not always laborious, to some people, it is understandably easy. There are many types of ways to take things for granted, specifically; family and friends, objects that was obtained by another, health, and how much freedom a person has. Although it may seem like a good commodity, it can lead to many hurt feelings or events. Even though taking things for granted can show a person is comfortable, it can also hurt how others think of one. Not only this, it can; affect a person’s education, it shows how a person truly thinks, and taking things for granted can cause a drop in a friendship or family.…

I often find myself walking around the house looking for the sunglasses that are on my head, or the keys that are in my pocket, or the pen I put behind my ear. I had what I needed the whole time I was looking. I wonder how I do that in things beyond the “missing” object. Searching for joy that it’s in the things around me; searching for growth that is taking place; searching for skills I already have; searching for confidence that’s there if I will grab it; searching for more when I have what I need. Like the moment I realize that the sunglasses I’ve looking for have been on my head the whole time, I want to see what I already have. I find I have what I’ve been searching for all along.…

Why do we often take for granted the very things that deserve our gratitude the most? We do this with both people and possessions. The problem is many people do not realize this until the situation has come and passed. We take things for granted on a daily basis, always with the assumption that whenever we need something, it will be there.…
