Suspense In The Landlady
Readers enjoy noticing suspense in stories because it hooks them on to read the rest of the story. In “The Landlady” by Roald Dahl, a man named Billy Weaver stays at a bed & breakfast and meets the Landlady. The Landlady is an odd woman. She appears as a kind and generous soul, but on the inside she is an evil and despicable lady with bone-chilling plans for Billy. In Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Tell-Tale Heart”, the old man had no problems with the narrator. The narrator actually liked the old man, but the level of insanity in the narrator’s head leads him to committing a horrific, gruesome act. Therefore, suspense is depicted in both Roald Dahl’s “The Landlady” and Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Tell-Tale Heart” through the use of symbolism and descriptive …show more content…
In “The Landlady”, descriptive language creating suspense is uncovered when Dahl writes, “He stood by the piano, watching her as she fussed about with the cups and saucers. He noticed that she had small, white, quickly moving hands, and red finger nails.” This describes the setting of the B&B and the appearance of the Landlady. In “The Tell-Tale Heart”, by Poe, descriptive language forms suspense from this quote from the narrator, “If you still think me mad, you will think so no longer when I describe the wise precautions I took for the concealment of the body. The night waned, and I worked hastily, but in silence. First of all I dismembered the corpse. I cut off the head and the arms and the legs. I then took up three planks from the flooring of the chamber, and deposited all between the scantlings. I then replaced the boards so cleverly, so cunningly, that no human eye--not even his—could have detected anything wrong. There was nothing to wash out--no stain of any kind--no bloodspot whatever. I had been to wary for that. A tub had caught all--ha! Ha!” That long, yet descriptive quote directly cracks open the fact that the narrator is insane and psychotic and obsessed with committing a gruesome act like the one in the story. Thus, suspense is depicted in both Roald Dahl’s short story “The Landlady” and Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Tell-Tale Heart” through the use of symbolism and descriptive language. That is why readers are so entertained when they read a suspenseful story. It hooks them on to

Edgar Allan Poe uses suspense in his story, “The Tell-Tale Heart” when the old man the narrator is trying to kill wakes up and does not go back to sleep. “I had my head in, and was about to open the lantern, when my thumb slipped upon the tin fastening, and the old man sprang up in the bed, crying out-“Who's there?” (Poe, 356). This tells you how he adds suspense because after this happened, they were just staying still for a while waiting for another sound to be made. Another use of suspense in the story is, “He was…

In both short stories, suspense was conveyed through the use of figurative language. In the short story, “The Landlady,” it talks about how Billy Weaver is walking through the town of Bath, and sees a small sign reading Bed and Breakfast. In this specific scene, the author writes expresses suspense by figurative language when it states, “Each word was like a large black eye staring at him through the glass, holding him, compelling him, forcing him…” This quote not only shows us a simile, but it also shows us an example of an epistrophe. Epistrophe is a repetition of a word at the end of a sentence. This quote depicts suspense through the use of figurative language by allowing the reader to feel what the character is feeling from an emotional standpoint, creating that extra dimension of being in the story. It gives the scene a bit more literal sense, creating fear within the reader, of what if it were actually happening. In the other short story, “The Monkey’s Paw,” it depicts suspense through the use of figurative language by stating, “…there was another knock and another.” This quote is when Mr. White made his second wish, wishing his son back to life. And it is when Herbert is knocking on the door. This demonstrates suspense through the use of onomatopoeia, by allowing us to hear the sound, as if the reader was in the story hearing that knock. Just hearing it over and over again. Alternatively, both authors deliver suspense through the use of setting…

The classic short story, The Tell Tale Heart, by Edgar Allen Poe, and the iconic Southern Gothic work, Everything That Rises Must Converge, by Flannery O’Connor, are two excellent examples of how authors use the tool of the narrator to manipulate the reader's knowledge and opinions on events happening around them. Though these short stories are vastly different in their plot line, both short stories explore the depths of human nature and opinion. Both Poe and O’Connor use literary devices, genre, and theme to demonstrate the untrustworthy nature of the narrator and how the reader should not and cannot always trust them. Both Poe and O'Connor use various literary devices to demonstrate the untrustworthy nature of the narrator in their respective short stories. In The Tell…

Authors can create suspense in their story´s by using tools in their writing such as punctuation, imagery, hyperboles, and repetition. Like in the story ¨The Tell-Tale Heart¨ by Edgar Allan Poe when he uses words such as dreadfully, conceived, haunted, vulture, killed, cautiously, and scarcely. An example would be in the first half of the story when the narrator says ¨Whenever it fell upon me, my blood ran cold¨. It is the certain dialogue that really gets you and makes you sometimes feel uncomfortable. The choice of words in a story really tells if it's suspenseful or not. Edgar Allan Poe really digs deep into his stories and captivates his readers in a scary way. In the story it says ¨They heard!-they suspected!-they knew!-they were making…

Most of us understand the designations of trepidation in a frightened person’s face—the ocular perceivers widen, the eyebrows shoot up, and the mouth opens to gasp or scream. A mundane person would visually perceive such a face and cerebrate “This person is trepidation,” but a psychopath wouldn’t cerebrate anything of it because he can’t understand the fear. It’s not that they culls not to—it’s that they authentically can’t.The two stories, “The Tell Tale Heart” by Edgar Allan Poe and “The Adventure of the Speckled Band” by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle have some kindred attributes and differences in the narration of their stories. “The Tell Tale Heart” was narrated by murderer, while “The Adventure of the Speckled Band” was narrated by a detective, but both stories are first person stories and about the murders.…

The two short stories “A Tell-Tale Heart” by Edgar Allen Poe and “The Gift of the Magi” by O’ Henry were two short stories that showed the writing skills of their authors. O’ Henry and Poe were two writers from different time periods, but use the same literary techniques in their works. Irony is defined as “a contradiction between expectation and reality” and suspense as “the growing interest and excitement felt while awaiting a climax or resolution.” O’ Henry and Poe used either suspense, irony, or both to make their stories more intense for the readers.…

I have been given the task of comparing three stories of suspense in three different styles of writing. During this essay I will discuss the way each story is written, how and why certain effects are achieved and what elements contribute to the mood and suspense of the story. Finally, I will conclude as to which story I have found the most successful. An important thing to look at when studying a story, in my opinion, is the title. Titles of some stories give away the plots or endings, where others are completely abstract and thought provoking, providing no clue as to what the story will be about. Either “Frankenstein” or “The Raven” is the best title out of the three stories that I have read. They give away that the story is about someone named Frankenstein or a raven, but nothing else that would spoil the plot or ending. This is beneficial to the reader, who would be able to get more involved in the story as more of the plot unfolds, especially in a novel. The title “Man Overboard” tells us that the story is about a man falling overboard. At first I considered it could be a metaphor but after reading the story, I found that it wasn´t. A story with a title that gives away the plot has advantages and disadvantages. Giving away some of the plot could make someone interested and make him or her want to know how that certain thing happened, for example, how the man fell overboard. A lot of the time, that is not always what happens. In some cases, the plot is given away too much by the title, which makes the story less exciting and spontaneous for the reader. The three stories I read were in the form of a novel, a short story and a poem. This had a dramatic effect on the way I thought about the stories and how I could analyse them. The novel contained many characters and small plots scattered around a central story line. This made it very complex and hard to understand at times, which kept me interested because I was determined to understand the story. Eventually, all…
