Starship Troopers Summary
The book that I read was titled Starship Troopers by Robert A. Heinlein. The book has 308 pages and was published by Van Rees Press • New York. © 1959 by Robert A. Heinlein. One plus was that the book had a joyful ending which left me smiling. Once minus was that many of the scenes were dragged out, dull, and how to get through, while also being partially confusing. This is so because I am not well versed in military terminology and battlefield occurrences, resulting in me not relating to the book. One interesting factor from the book was that humans were fighting earth-like arachnids for livable planets and that the arachnids could build weapons and ships to rival humans. The book begins with Juan Rico describing ‘the shakes’ he gets before …show more content…
The incentive being his wife’s death and deep down he knew he should have joined earlier in life. Juan discovers Carl died while on Pluto and unexpectedly isn’t shaken since death is common while serving. On a crucial mission to capture bug royalty, Juan is commanding his own men while on Planet P. While waiting for the Bugs to surface, the ground beneath suddenly collapses, expelling thousands of bugs surely dooming Juan. Acting fast, Juan hastily flees noticing the force was comprised of only workers acting as a feint. With his troops, Juan enters tunnels dug by the Bugs. Within the complex tunnels, troops dwindle, one soldier manages to locate a ‘brain bug’ which acts as the sole brain for the expendable forces. Attacking from behind, Juan and his troops free their comrade, suddenly the roof falls atop of a now unconscious Juan. Upon waking, Juan discovers six brains and no royalty were captured. The book then concludes with a time skip, Juan as a Lieutenant and his own troops preparing for a drop. His uniform, rightfully titled Rico’s Roughnecks, a tribute his original ship’s Lieutenant, Razak, and what he called his uniform; Razak's

Hope Solo My Story By Hope Solo, was written to entertain the reader. The main purpose of this book was to get Hope’s story out there so she sounds like a mean person with no feelings. Hope Said some things that were rude about one of her teammates because she wasn't started in an important game. Hope had a meltdown and he could be one of the reasons she wrote this book. Hope was upset and embarrassed the whole entire team. Her teammates hated her and the girl who she thought she was close to back stabbed her. Hope took a break and hoped things would get better. The latter did after the head coach was fired and replaced with Pia. Pia was an upbeat coach she sung to us during practice and was always happy.…

Leto’s approach to playing Rayon Real in Dallas Buyers Club was Inside/Out. He used Stanislavski’s system called ‘spiritual realism’ by completely emerging himself into the character he was playing. He never broke out of character while filming even his costars said that it felt like they were working with Rayon not Jared Leto. There are some elements that may make you think that Leto used an Outside/In approach because he actually lost a lot of weight, waxed his body and changing his dialect (physical and visual stimuli) but since he was trying to be as realistic as possible it makes it an Inside/Out approach. You could also see the psychological and mental changes that happened to the real Rayon Real (dealing with her sexuality, having AIDS,…

In the movie Sergeant York my group and I decided to do the scene in which Alvin York gets struck by lightning. In my opinion is the turning point of the character, because Alvin is known as the “bad boy” in town. He does not have very much respect, and this scene is completely life changing to the character. The scene first starts off Alvin riding his horse in a very bad thunderstorm. The sound is a non-diegetic orchestra that is playing immensely loud. The orchestra music builds a lot of tension because while its playing there is lighting striking. The music perfectly captures the audience attention because viewers will be sucked in thinking that Alvin York is gonna die or get struck by lighting because the music is emphasized with its weird medallic tune that creates the eerie feeling of “whats going to happen”. Coincidentally Alvin ends up getting struck by lighting. Almost immediately after he gets struck by lightning, the orchestra music is switched to the background with a different tone. Initially the tone of Alvin riding his horse during the storm was very unpleasant and suspenseful but the aftermath of being hit by the lightning changed it from being a dark atmosphere to a light. The music changes to a very peaceful and calm orchestra. With the music becoming very calm signifies Alvin York’s reawakening as a character. During the impact of him being…

Female characters are often absent in SF as there is rarely any need for romance. In the portrayal of Carmen in Starship Troopers, the body does not automatically make a character masculine or feminine. Given the lack of real women, feminine substitutes may fill the void, these substitute figures connecting the narrator of The War of the Worlds and Juan to their femininity before being eradicated or accepted. In The War of the Worlds, the curate shows up just as the narrator thinks about his wife. He is described with a ‘thin white hand’(70) and ‘almost a complaining tone’(70), both feminine traits. Arguably he becomes the replacement of the narrator’s wife, requiring the narrator’s protection and reassurance. This is what the narrator does with his wife…

For my paper I decided to take a look at two movies that I highly enjoy watching Starship Troopers and Pride and compare and contrast them with a theory that we have learned this semester. I chose these films not only for their stark differences in plot, but for more importantly the various ways male characters are depicted in these films. I will be analyzing the bulk of male characters in each of these movies through the eyes of the masculine theory. As you know the masculine theory deals with the various ways that male roles are depicting in the film and sometimes can even be used to see how woman are depicted in films if they are depicted in a masculine way. When analyzing a film this way you need to look at how males are represented in…

The song lyrics above are from the soundtrack of the film Menace II Society and correspond directly to the hardships that people are given when growing up in the ghetto and when surrounded by a life of violence. Because they know nothing other than this aggressive and brutal way of life, they continue this violent cycle and rarely break away to begin a new way of life. Twin brothers Albert and Allen Hughes direct the film. The Hughes began making movies at age 12, but their formal film education began their freshman year of high school when Allen took a TV production class. They soon made a short film entitled How To Be A Burglar and people began to take notice. Their next work, Uncensored Videos, was broadcast on cable, introducing them to a wider audience. After high school, Albert began taking classes at the Los Angeles Community College Film School. Two short films established the twins' reputation as innovative filmmakers and allowed them to direct Menace II Society (1993), which made its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival and grossed nearly 10 times as much as its $3 million budget. After following up with Dead Presidents (1995) they directed the feature-length documentary American Pimp (1999). From the very first scene, detailing Caine and O-Dog's fatal armed robbery of a Korean market, violence is cruelly graphic. "In this instance, the film succeeds in painting a disturbing picture of violence, one in which the characters' lack of remorse, rather than stylistic convention, shapes and colors the horror of the image." Although most of the violence is filmed realistically and unfolds in real time, the Hughes can't seem to resist…

Countless Vietnam veterans were psychologically scared, while other was embittered by poor treatment the public gave them when they came home. I choose Forrest Gump as a historical movie. The movie was about a young man with a mental disability that goes through this major event in the 1960 – 1970s not only that but it was kind of romantic. Though out the entire movie, Forrest seems to be going along with the time line in his life looking for his first true love Jenny. Mean while she is living it out as a hippie tagging along with the wrong crowd and as for Forrest he maintains hope that one day she will love him. Not only that but the events that he lived in leads him to become a war hero and a billionaire. In the end he realize that life keeps on going as a “destiny or floating alike a breeze”.…

The commanding heights documentary episode one was actually quite pleasing. I do enjoy documentaries, and this was one I really had no prior knowledge of. I believe it will help me see a different side of economics. What stood out to me the most in the film was how post world war one, they believed more government control meant better economic outcome. This makes sense of why we had a rise in dictators, and the reason world war two even started. Post war, inflation in Germany and Austria made money worthless. It was said that money was worth less than actual wallpaper. We learned a little about inflation in class and how as the years go on, our money becomes less valuable. We raise our minimum wage due to inflation. With inflation, our life becomes more and more expensive seeing our money goes less as far. The real and nominal value of money are not the same. This is why our minimum wage changes every few years.…
