When children enter a sport for the first time in their life, one main goal is to have fun and to meet new friends. They do not have a care in the world, and are just there to learn about the sport they are learning. Being in a sport brings many positive aspects to a child’s psychological growth. It is only later in their involvement in sports that they find out how competitive it can be and how there is more added pressure from not only their coaches, but their parents as well. Despite this, there is still a growing population in children in sports. According to the National Council of Youth Sports, there was a major increase in youth sport participation in organized sports in 2008 of 40 million boys and girls (Mango, 2010). With this great increase, there is a constant thought going through every parent’s minds: is competition good for his/her child? Competition is beneficial for a child, however there needs to be some boundaries for how parents and coaches get involved in the child’s performance. Even though the media only shows the bad views on child competition, because it gives a better story, it gives the children the necessary skills to get ahead in the world they will have to face as adults.…

Academic learning and Sport Education are actually the complementariness of each other. They are the two sides of the same coin, which go hand and hand with each other. If education and athletics make a full development of the over-all personality of a person possible, he or she gets the qualities of leadership, tolerance, sharing and team-spirit from sports. In the article “The Positive Effects of Athletics On Educations” by Matt Blackburn(71) states that athletics has shown the improve the work ethic, increase the self- esteem, and increase the academic performance and achievement of the student-athletes involved. But according to the article “Contrary to Popular Belief: Athletics, A Negative Effect on Education” by Jake Cartwright states, In this country, athletics are seen as a great stepping stones for students to develop character, learn valuable skills, and they further aid in the everyday education of students. However, too many people are naïve as to the truth about what effects athletics truly have on a student’s education. But with that said, I agree with Matt Blackburn and see that there are many positive effects of athletics in education and believe he proves his opinion very well. As I go on how athletics and education are complimentary of each other, I will discuss how education and athletics go hand and hand, and the positive benefits of Athletics.…

When asked about what needs to be done to encourage youths in this country to be involved in sports, ex-Olympian and International Sports Official, Datuk Dr Mani Jegathesan says it is absolutely crucial that we push for a healthy lifestyle, including physical activity, for all Malaysians, especially the youth. “They are our future, life habits and skills are best inculcated in the formative years”, he adds. “A time-tested method for encouraging physical activity is the practice of sport. Sport brings not just the exercise component, but psychological and social benefits as well. Sport is fun, exciting and engaging, and sports can teach us many good values.” It is no surprise that Dr Jegathesan.s view concurs that the schools and the community, in which the youth work and play, would be the best place to strongly advocate this by first making the programmes attractive and compelling to attract the young people. Instead of engaging themselves in some anti-social behaviours, their involvement in all kinds of sports will help develop a healthier generation of young Malaysians with a more confident, competitive and positive outlook in life. Hence, the recent decision by the Education Ministry to slash the annual allocation to the Malaysian Schools Sports Council (MSSM) from RM6 million to RM1.5 million is definitely a bane to the promotion of sports among the young people in the midst of rising anti-social behaviours. Where there used to be 24 sports, catering for the Under-12, Under-15 and Under-18, now a number of these sports have to be slashed to nearly half of the number of sports. A number of sports like handball, rugby, sailing, table tennis, cricket, softball, cross country, chess, bowling, squash and archery have been axed from the programme. Some of these are the sports such as squash, bowling and archery have put Malaysia…
