Speech for Recognition Day
Like most of you today, my feelings are really overwhelming. I know, you guys are as excited about this event as I am so excited to speak before you today. Not so long ago, I was seating exactly where you are right now and hearing an inspirational talk from a guest speaker back then. Yes, I am but a proud alumna of T. Paez and soon you too will be part of the Alumni. I never really imagined myself addressing you for your Recognition Day.
I never thought I could be the right person to inspire you today. Nevertheless, here I am, years after I made my first wise choice.
That choice back in 1981 gave me freedom and life that I have today.
Today, T. Paez will name those outstanding students who brought honors to themselves, and to this school. As we, you gather here and start viewing those simple and ordinary faces, you will realize that these achievers are exactly as everyone else. The only thing different is that, they have made their choices. That is to STAND and be recognized in the area where they choose to be the best one. It is a matter of CHOICE. It is between doing the right thing or not, or be recognized in good things or in all foolish activities.
You see, life is but an everyday activity filled with options. It is a daily routine to choose… and to decide…which one to pick up and which one to set aside. You started your day by waking up asking yourselves if you are feeling going to school or not, if will you have your Mommy’s breakfast or just have some food in school instead, or it will be a just plainly picking up colors for the day. Things like these, without you realizing, we are actually having tireless choosing and deciding moments the whole day.
But this morning I will give a big significance on this human activity which is our freedom to choose. Our freedom to choose includes freedom NOT to choose. By these two opposing but actually related liberties, we need to choose both for our benefit.
This is easy as we are just going to use our freedom

to be easy, everyone would go through the days knowing the answers to their lives. Nothing would be an unexpected surprise to people, but that is not the case. Instead, we attempt to plan out every day and learn to expect the unexpected. A person can try to plan the best future for him or herself, but when it comes down to it, it is ultimately not in his or her hands. Whether a person is rich or poor, beautiful or hideous, popular or lonely, powerful or shy, that is who he or she is and he or she is wonderful. Life is worth living no matter which “category” one falls under. But is that all there is to it? Is life just simply one’s ego? People spend their entire life trying to get on the right track to life, but what about when that is all taken away. Questioning the value of a person’s life when he or she is living versus when he or she…

Thank you. If you keep watching, there is an episode where they celebrate V-A Day which is the day that the war ended. Again, if you strip away all the Nazi stuff, it could be Thanksgiving. It could be an Independence Day. It is really chilling by how closer it is to the American Dream than not at all.…

Socrates’ claim that the “unexamined life is not worth living” is very true. Imagine if you were to just go through the motions from birth to death and never be able to put meaning to any of it, why do it at all? Going through the motions is just a step in life, however learning which motions to repeat and which should never be repeated again is how life is measured. Examine everything you do from your morning ritual to your nightly routines. In the morning, you brew some coffee or stop by your favorite store for your cup of java. Why would you keep doing it? Simple answer without examining it closely would be because it helps motivate me and wakes me up. What you typically don’t stop and examine is that in order for you to make it or go get it, you are already awake. It motivates you is simply a response when in fact you motivate the purchasers to ensure you have the coffee accessible. You have simply put yourself, mentally, in a routine and justify it with responses you tell yourself so that you keep doing it. Simply replace your coffee with tea or water and your mind will keep telling you it helps you wake up and motivates you. In the evening you go home and prioritize the rest of your day. Meals for the family, laundry, clean, homework with the kids, and if there is time enjoy some outside or event with the family. Again without examining each step, it just seems like a routine. Instead ask yourself why you do these things and in what order; all of a sudden your day will make sense! You ensure your family is well nurtured to achieve greater things and enable them to live longer through smart diets and good eating habits. Your might prepare meals due to the fact your spouse never really cooks for flavor! You do laundry and clean to ensure a neat environment and might entice your family to assist so that there is more family time to have fun with instead of just doing chores. Doing homework with the kids is not to make sure they are understanding the material, it…

As a child, decisions like finishing homework during free time or choosing to procrastinate for the last minute often arise, and the adolescent would usually chose the latter. This situation is one of the common, least life changing ones dealt by many people, while other predicaments can be on a more serious not, like choosing between what is moral and immoral. These accounts show that throughout life, situations arise and one has to think about how they should deal with it to approach a resolution. It might be easier to do what “we want to do” rather than doing what we “ought to do,” and take “the one less traveled by” as Robert Frost might say. These decisions must be made, no matter the size of the problem or the amount of effort. Through history, the arrival of choices between right and wrong make a large impact on how lives plan out.…
