Soldiers
Stephanie Mattig Period: 3
87 years ago was 1776 our ancestors built up a new nation where there would be liberty and the belief that everyone is equal. We were then going through a great war which would determine if this nation can last with liberty and equality. We are here on a great battlefield of that war. We have come to dedicate a piece of it as a cemetery for the soldiers who gave their lives defending our nation. It was wise to dedicate Cemetery Hill to the soldiers, and yet it really wasn't in their to do that to set apart that section as sacred. The brave soldiers who fought in the battle had already done that more than the gathered people ever could, simply by fighting for freedom there. No one will remember what is being said here but rather what will be remembered is what the soldiers did there. So instead of dedicating Cemetery Hill to the dead soldiers, the people should be dedicated to what all the brave men have done, to their unfinished work that was brought so far. These dead soldiers gave their lives fighting for freedom, and that the nation's people are now loyal even more to freedom because of that. Those soldiers will not have died in vain because "we the people" are going to be devoted to what they fought for. "We the people" will make sure that liberty and equality remain. And "We the people" will make sure that a government of the people, by the people, and for the people is going to be here to

Our nation has a way of repeating history, especially when the country is in need of unification. After the Battle of Gettysburg, during the Civil War, many Union and Confederate soldiers lost their lives and while the Union soldiers were buried right there on their home soil, the Confederate soldiers were brought back to the South. Four months after the battle, President Abraham Lincoln delivered his famous Gettysburg Address to honor those who had lost their lives. Lincoln began the Gettysburg Address by reminiscing of the signing of the Declaration of Independence 87 years ago from that day. The Declaration of Independence unified everyone together under one nation and stated that all were born with inalienable rights and therefore should…

Our movement may be one of a few days duration and full of pleasure - and it may be one of severe conflict and death to me. Not my will, but thine 0 God, be done. If it is necessary that I should fall on the battlefield for my country, I am ready. I have no misgivings about, or lack of confidence in, the cause in which I am engaged, and my courage does not halt or falter. I know how strongly American Civilization now leans upon the triumph of the Government, and how great a debt we owe to those who went before us through the blood and suffering of the Revolution. And I am willing - perfectly willing - to lay down all my joys in this life, to help maintain this Government, and to pay that debt.…

When I think about all of those who have gone before me, all who have sacrificed and fought and persevered and yet have continued to hope and dream in a better America, I realize that they did not let the fear of their past affect the promise of their future. They did not give up living for the promise of the future. I realize that if I am going to be a part of this country, then I had better do the same. So many brave people have sacrificed to make America what it is today. They began with, and held tightly to, a hope in all that we could be. They sought and fought for freedom, safety, equality, liberty, and justice for all. And, they did not…

Our armed forces exist solely to ensure our nation is safe, so that each and every one of us can sleep soundly at night, knowing we have 'guardians at the gate.'” We must never forget the lives that were taken while protecting our country. Having the privilege to lay the wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown would touch me on a personal level. I have a great-great uncle who served in Vietnam. I remember hearing stories of how his mother and sister were worried sick that he wouldn’t make it home. Thankfully, he arrived home safely. On the other hand, somewhere there was a mother who will never know what happened to her son. A mother who never got to lay her little boy to rest. A wife that never got to grow old with her husband. Maybe even a little girl who was never able to have her daddy walk her down the aisle. Although the identities of these men are unknown, they all have a different story. I could never imagine what it would be like to never truly know what happened to your father, son, or brother. It brings tears to my eyes thinking about those families who faced that type of situation. If I were able to lay the wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, it would become my greatest responsibility. I would forever remember the day that I was able to honor those who fought for our…
