Social Class and Caroline House
Caroline O’Kane
Social class is often judged upon by the following criteria; money, possessions, and ranking. In our society today, so much of our life is focused on social ranking. There are those who actively try to climb the social ladder while there are others simply who seem to be at the highest status. In Westport, it seems that most people are privileged in some way. I’ve grown up being on the soccer team, traveling on vacations to Arizona, the Caribbean, and London, never giving much thought to social class. These activities and gifts are just part of my life. However, over the last few years, I have come to realize that there are people who do not have these privileges. That is when I began noticing different social classes.
I am part of the National Charity League, a Mother / Daughter organization formed to do charity work throughout Fairfield County to benefit others who don’t have as much as we do. We make dinner for the Gillespie Center, babysit at Bacharach Houses, homes owned by the town to help educate women with children, and so much more. However, out of all the philanthropies that I have been a part of throughout the years, the most influential experience for me has been tutoring children at the Caroline House in Bridgeport.
After traveling a mere 7 exits on I-95 from Westport, one finds Bridgeport, Connecticut, a town so vastly different from Westport yet so close. Houses are packed elbow to elbow, each only spanning one room wide. There are no bright colors painting the houses, if there is any paint at all.
A few blocks off the highway is a “home” called the Caroline House. Children and adults come daily to learn, play, and have a safe haven. With the National Charity League we are given the opportunity to help teach elementary and middle school students. Over the summer I chose to tutor at the Caroline House. Seeing the kids show up at 9 o’clock each and every day ready to learn made me very proud to see young students with such a

When I first pulled up to the small house located on Tyree street, there was a line of vagrant and less fortunate people. My first task was to escort each individual to the back of the house to the pantry room. In the pantry, I had to give each person a plastic bag and they were able to choose a few items from the room. When they were done, they moved to the clothes closet to pick out a few pairs of clothes and/or shoes. If they need assistance with anything else, someone was there to help them with their needs. There was a specific amount of food each person was given but not a set amount of clothing. After I was done with one client, I repeated those steps with the next. Throughout the semester, we've talked about minorities in the United States. I have taken time out to actually observe the people around the community and I've realized how much they are suffering from several social problems such as economic inequalities, families and children living in poverty, and the inability to apply or be approved for jobs to have the opportunity to help their families. Charities and nonprofit organizations play a major role in helping families who aren't able to help…

This year’s event took place across the nation on October 28 and the residents of the Ocean Ridge Plantation were amongst the many volunteers across the country giving of their time to help make an impact on their community. ORCA’s intent with this first-time endeavor was to inspire the residents of our community to work together for one day, for one cause. Under the direction of committee members George Briggs, Laura Wheaton, Corinne Eisenstein, Kath Larson, Pris Lovell and Beth Naylor, their ambition was to engage over 100 resident volunteers in a hands-on charitable activity – Ocean Ridge Goes M.A.D.D. – and by day’s end, they surpassed that…

Without some the reversals in his own life, he would have been unable to become the man he was. That is why I would like to institute a community service project titled “A Series of Fortunate Reversals” (ASFR), to help combat education inequality in low-income areas. To be a part of ASFR, parents must demonstrate a willingness to work, to better their own lives with support of the AU community, ASFR is not a free handout. Preferably, ASFR will work with mothers during the developmental years, from pregnancy to the age of six. Families will receive support from departments in the College of Arts and Sciences and the Kogod School of Business. Students and faculty from the elementary and secondary education, health promotion, psychology and finance majors will support ASFR families. This way parents can gain financial and mental health counseling and learn how to lead a healthy lifestyle for themselves and children. They will also receive academic support for themselves so they will be able to support their children through their own academic journeys. Children will also receive academic support and counseling if needed. By providing these support systems, the goal is to showcase the value of education and to encourage a life-long love of learning. Families can participate in many of the free events held throughout the city of Washington DC as extra enrichment. Education is often the key to…

Throughout the past few years I have taken part in many projects and activities to foster education and global engagement. The most recent is my upcoming outreach trip to the Agnes Zabali Boys and Girls Club. This trip was planned by myself, 3 other education students and our faculty supervisor. The purpose of this trip is to provide support for the Agnes Zabali Boys and Girls Club (AZBGC). As Education students, we are taking this opportunity to provide daily lessons for the children who visit the Boys and Girls Club. We started the planning in September and we have put in over 120 hours since then in order to make this trip as beneficial for the children at the AZBGC. Apart of this planning, we have raised funds to help support the children's’ education costs. While planning for this outreach trip, I decided to partner with a local grade seven class to teach them about social justice. Their classroom teacher told me that with the recent media attention in the USA she is having difficulty teaching her students about justice and discrimination. We decided to partner together to teach both the Ugandan Children as well as the Canadian grade seven class about what it is like to live in a different part of the world. This partnership will entail writing letters to each other as well as creating a video about life in each of their respective locations.…

Over the past summer I had the opportunity to go to Deep Impact in Shelby, North Carolina. Deep Impact is a mission camp that is run by The Baptist Men that gathers youth groups throughout the state to help the needy and to spread the Word of Jesus. There were different mission teams at the camp and I was placed on a construction team. On my construction team, we helped elderly and disabled people by building wheelchair ramps for them. The construction team had three supervisors, and they made the kids on the team do most of the work. We would do different kinds of work like digging out holes for posts, saw boarding, or screwing in decking boards. I really enjoyed this kind of work and it really made me feel good that when we finished, we were…

Social class in America is a subject which always has and always will continue to affect our daily lives. The video "People like us: Social Class in America" offered several depictions of class in the U.S.. The video's depictions ranged in accuracy in terms of its definition of social classes. However the video itself caused me to realize the great affect social class has on my life as well as the lives of those around me. Classism in the United States is a very big, yet silent prejudice that is continually causing many problems in our society.…

According to the Webster dictionary, social class is defined as a group of people who share economic and social status. Social class is separated by one’s wealth and how they present themselves. James W. Loewen once said that “social class is probably the most important variable in society. From womb to tomb, it correlates with all other social characteristics of people.” Here he is stating that social class is something a person will have to deal with for from birth to death; it will develop a person and their unique characteristics (compound sentence). Social standings are ubiquitous, which makes the idea of this quote so intriguing. As the world becomes more complex, the division between social classes becomes more apparent…

While I will always hold dear to me the various worlds my mother has opened to me abroad, my life has been equally transformed by what she has shown me just a couple miles from my house. As a thirteen year old, I often accompanied my mother to the Red Cross's children's cent. While she attended meetings, I helped with the Summer Program by chasing children around the building and performing magic tricks. In the five years since I first walked through the doors of the Red Cross, I have learned not only the idea of giving to others, but also of obtaining a sense of spirit from them.…

One activity that reflects my personal commitment to community service is Totem Tutoring. Totem Tutoring is a place where students at Mountain Pointe can come and be tutored by other students who are knowledgeable in specific subjects. Initially, I started tutoring at Totem because I was unknowingly in room where it was taking place, and a student asked me for help understanding chemistry. Once I discovered that I was unwittingly participating in the program, I decided to continue my involvement as a way to give back to student body and hopefully brighten someone’s future. Consequently, I have been a tutor of math, science, and Spanish at Totem Tutoring for the past two years. Due to the nature of Totem Tutoring, there are times that tutors…

Researchers are debating about the definitions of class and what are contributing factors to class (Gilfillan, 2009; Crompton, 2010). Because the society is complicated, there are many possible aspects that can define status and class (Robson, 2016). Bourdieu (1986) proposes that the factors that constitute class can be found in the economic, social, cultural, and symbolic capitals of a person. They are, for instance, accent, clothing, physical look and education (Charlesworth, 2004). When the lower class people are able to attain prosperity or power and break through to the higher class, called “upwardly mobile”, the large difference in the level of Bourdieu’s…

As a volunteer with my high school friends, we were given the opportunity to attended and to help to explain how the program works. A woman named Kathy came and approached me. Although I could tell that she was exhausted, but she offered a warm smile as she greeted me . Afterward we began to walk towards the table, she informed me that she was a mother of five children, and this would be the first check up she's had in the last two years. Her story began to inspire me in more ways than I could have ever imagined. The most amazing aspect of Kathy was the joy when she talked to me about her children. Her dream was for her children to have a better education. Although she doesn't have enough money to take care of her children but she won't give up and always keeps up the hard work. We sorted out the perfect medications for each of her children and stacked them carefully in her bag. As she gathered her things to leave, she embraced me tightly and continued to thank me. She reminded me that this will mean the world to her children, and she could not even begin to describe how much my help meant to her. I smiled back with happiness .…

To get involved with the community this semester, I joined a group of Southeastern students that have been going to Dakota Park apartments for the past year and a half to do kids outreach on Saturdays. It was exciting to see how, as soon as the cars pulled up, the kids swarmed to the field in the middle of the apartments and were ready to play with anyone, even though they had never met many of us before. I am not an initially outgoing person, so it took me a while to gather my thoughts and decide what to do and where to go since there were kid…
