Located on the southside of chicago in a englewood neighborhood is a highschool know as Harper High. The area surrounding this school is known for death of its student residents and gang violence. There were nearly 30 students shot, twenty one wounded by and eight students killed. The school itself is a relatively safe place, but the beefs and fights in the neighborhood around it frequently mushroom into gunplay. The gun violence happens off of school grounds but majority of the time involves the students, leaving them to try and navigate in a world with funerals and homecoming dances. After hearing the descriptive stories from the students and staff at the school it is clear that the social organization of the school, when functioning normally…
Mrs. Greenberg- (David’s mother) she left David and Lindsey because she had a phobia that made it hard for her to leave the house. She felt like she was trapped in her home. She ended up leaving to be with a farmer from Maine named Marcus.…
The change that occurs from middle childhood to adolescence is arguably one of the most profound changes that children go through. Not only do children change physically but emotionally. “Adolescence is the transitional period between late childhood and the beginning of adulthood, and marks the beginning of the reproductive lifespan in humans. Adolescence involves sexual maturity in terms of hormones and physical development of the body, and is also characterized by an increase in the complexity of group interactions and thus social behavior (Lerner and Steinberg, 2004)”. During this time of transition many develop a stronger sense of self and begin to separate from completely…
Social cliques are seen in movies, read in books, but rarely displayed in high school. Speaking as a teen, I can honestly say that I have yet to see pronounced cliques in my high school. Maybe I seem a bit biased, but I fail to see how cliques like this are formed. Rosalind Wiseman wrote this article, and it is nothing but what is displayed in movies, not real life. I mean, how could a group of teenage girls create a “Target”? It sounds like an action movie more than it does a group of girls. It seems to me that this is stereotypically based on fictional movie portrayals, and not teenagers as honest-to-god people.…

Many students claim that middle school is exceedingly straightforward and easy, whereas others claim that middle school is complex and difficult. For those who succeed in school and claim school is easy say that because they work diligently. It’s not because they are naturally talented. The students who say middle school is difficult and flounder in their studies say school is difficult because they don’t work assiduously and they don’t have perseverance. In fact, there are several kids at school who are talented fail their classes. This is because they don’t have grit and they are also often too lazy to do their work. In my own case, I am considered as one of the naturally talented people. Many of my peers think that I receive good grades because I am talented. However, I know this is not the case. In reality, I have been recieving good grades because I have been working diligently. Most homework assignments in middle school require hard work, critical thinking, and perseverance(which means no procrastinating). There are also many conundrums and…
Middle school is when I first realized how mean girls could be, forming cliques and teasing kids who did not fit into their idea of “normal.” I instantly discovered that I did not want to be included in the drama-filled cliques of middle school girls. While boys can act the same way, I noticed that they do not typically care about the same drama as girls.…
By the time a person has reached pubescence they are met with the overwhelming perception to stand out. Preteens are forced to find themselves at the same time as they feel they must fit in with everyone around them. In today's time, with technology and information ready at the flick of a switch, they are left surrounded by the ideas of adulthood and the influence of peers at every turn. Likewise, schools leave only the impression of an education on students, not a moral code, which leaves social influence to be left upon only their peers. There are a variety of factors that lead middle schoolers to social conformity.…
In order to be an effective middle school educator, it is imperative to understand the developmental complexity of young adolescents. Students aged ten to fifteen experience irregular personal changes that call for certain needs. Not only are students at this age diverse in their backgrounds, but also they are also diverse in their development. During the middle school years, young adolescents experience a number of intellectual, physical, social, emotional, and moral changes. Middle schools need to be developmentally responsive meaning that they need to consider the particular nature of students in sixth, seventh, and eighth grade while making school decisions. As a middle level professional, it is my responsibility to accommodate…
Every school you attend is going to have different types of groups or as most people call them “cliques” no matter where you go, all schools have them. These are small groups of kids with common interests and who have lots of things in common. The types of “cliques” you associate yourself with are always so important to kids these days. Being a part of a popular “clique” usually brings you up on the social scale and that’s what so many kids focus on. It always matters who you hang out with, what sports or clubs you involve yourself with. So if you were to come in to high school where would you fall?…
When students move from elementary to middle school, they face numerous social challenges. For example, middle schools are often much larger, and students may find themselves separated from their elementary school friends. They have to make new friends in a strange, unfamiliar setting. Also, instead of having one teacher, students have five to seven different teachers a day. That is a lot of new people to get used to.…
Growing up in the church starting at a very young age was most definitely a blessing but also a curse. I always loved going to bible class when I was in preschool and elementary school but during the beginning of middle school, I had a change of heart. I didn’t have the same fire burning in me that I once did. I didn’t truly know what it meant to be a christian and everyone noticed my sudden change.…
Throughout majority of my high school life, I always questioned why things operated the way they did. Being forced to go to a place, or my parents could possibly go to jail. To be honest it sort of felt like a indoctrination. Going there I noticed everything was controlled and different social groups where created based on different peoples personalities. The irony of it all is that from a young age school seemed to indorse individuality, yet hypocritical policies such as school uniforms still took place later in the years.…

As society changes, so do people. Life now moves at a rapid paste that is often set by ever-changing technology. More and more everyday youths get caught up in this fast paste world. This is not a problem we face locally, more so one that threatens us internationally. Many factors contribute to this change, such as problems and challenges, responsibilities and lifestyle and geographic location and school.…
