SOAPSTONE #2 SOAPSTONE: There Is No Unmarked Women

Speaker: the speaker and author of this article is Deborah Tannen who is a professor of linguistics at Georgetown University in Washington DC.
Occasion: this article was first published in The New York Times Magazine on June 20, 1993. It is set at a working conference of 12.
Audience: the article is directed to a very broad audience. Not only because it was published in the New York Times which is one of the most read newspapers in the United States but because she directs it towards everyone. Mainly it is for women who are trying to hard to speak through their appearance, women who perhaps don’t try hard enough. As well as the less obvious answer which is men that unintentionally do “mark” these women.
Purpose: to shed some light and possibly even by raising the awareness make a small impact on one’s first instinct to judge or mark as she puts it, these women who will be judges either way.
Subject: about how women no matter what they do will end with a label placed on them. They try to hard and they are too available, if they don’t try hard enough then they are too comfortable and don’t care. As well as labels such as Mrs. Vs Ms which is a problem like others that men don’t have to face.
Tone: she is very even as far as keeping her opinions inoffensive to either side (man or woman) who is reading the article. She is also upset and clearly wants to change the way that women are marked but discouraged because she doesn’t believe it can

Despite what was mentioned above, she did provide facts and reassured the audience that other women does suffer sexist vitriol. One could feel her passion and vigor on the topic to the point one would get blinded by the fact there’s no solid purpose. The entire article is just filled with examples of sexist vitriol. The first paragraph is her personal example. The second was her thesis. The next three are about Clinton and how Kafer is against the use of vitriol to diminish her. Following that she brought up identity-based insults. Then the next paragraphs focus on different women and their experience with sexist…

In his opening statement, he says "Warning for our male readers: The following article contains big words and complex sentences. It might be a good idea to have a woman nearby to explain it to you."# In my opinion, this quote is very degrading because in simple terms its calling every man an idiot. Male bashing seems like it originated from a bunch of lonely women who probably got dumped by their husband/boyfriend and this is how they get their payback. You would think that the men would have done something about it from a long time ago, but in reality they are just the silent victims. They have no say and can do nothing about it because the media and our society evidently agrees with what the women have to…

Categorizing or erasing an individual’s identity in today’s society based off of gender, religion, race, as well as sexuality is a common occurrence. It is difficult to grasp the concept of a society that is completely devoid of robbing an individual’s humanity or even falling victim to the process of stereotyping. Although, change is a must, will people follow through to obliterate the everyday stereotypes or fall blind to the assumptions that lurk through our society? Woman everyday must leap through the rings of insularity that shape our society’s expectations of how a woman “should be.” Therefore, women all have multiple identities that are shaped through either systems of power or oppression…

In Deborah Tannen’s essay “There Is No Unmarked Woman” she describes how every woman is “marked” in some way. She tells about how everyone judges or “marks” a woman by what kind of clothes she is wearing, whether they are tight or hang limply from her body. What kind of make-up she is wearing to how she styles her hair. She says that just by writing her essay and pointing out the fact that women are marked makes her marked. Getting married and changing you name makes you marked. The fact that you want to wear high heels instead of flats or flip flops instead of tennis shoes makes you marked. The world we live in marks us the day we decide to be different with everyone else, and for a girl, that’s at an early age. Well I am here to tell you that whatever she says isn’t always true. We can be unmarked if we want to.…
