Snake Oil By Morton Tavel Summary
The book Tips, Myths, and Tricks, A Physician's Advice Health Information to Liberate Us From "Snake Oil" was written by Morton E. Tavel, M.D. In his introduction, Dr. Tavel said he wrote the book with the goal of cutting through the nonsense we as consumers are inundated with while providing us with useful tips that can improve our health and wellbeing.

In my opinion, he comes pretty close to accomplishing his goal. I give this book, 3 out of 4 stars, not because I necessarily agree with everything he says, but because as a consumer of products and services that affect mine, and my family's health, he provides numerous references and suggestions that make me question those products and services. He makes the reader think.

The book is divided into three sections: Tips, Myths and Tricks. I discovered a number of little nuggets of information in the Tips section. For instance, I knew that drinking water before a meal was a good idea simply because you would be fuller faster, but I did not know that by drinking 16 ounces of water before meals, a person could cut up to 75 calories per meal!

Now, granted, that's a topic that I have very little interest in except to know that I am supposed to avoid them as a healthy eater. However, with Dr. Tavel's conversational tone, I found myself paying close attention to what I read. Specifically, I now know that trans fats are essentially used to prolong the shelf life of certain foods. Just that little bit of information alone, makes me want to avoid them even

I think his writing was meant to be more on the inspiring and entertaining side, rather than informative. Some of those include trying to get people to change their lives in some way, having people become…

I reexamined the foods i've been consuming and became astounded. Looking at something as classic as bread, a food that used to contain only a few ingredients, now contains dozens. The effects of the industrialization are all around us, especially in our food. I was unaware that products that make health claims aren't exactly healthy and was surprised to find all of the tricks and loopholes the FDA allows. The rules regarding wording are ambiguous, thus making the health claims on foods almost frivolous. This book examined the diet fads of the past in America such as when margarine was considered to be healthier than butter. I’ve learned that we come up with a new diet plan and find “stunning” data that will better our health all the time, but our health has yet to make a drastic improvement. While we continue to consume the Western Diet, we look for ways to outsmart it rather than do the obvious thing and move away from it. Ultimately, I came away from the book with far more knowledge then when I entered. The book offered great incite into the food industry and how it all works. I am glad I read this book and will definitely implement some lessons into my life.…

His use of repetition is another great aspect of his liturature. The repetition creates rythym for the reader and help the words seemingly flow right off the page. This is a great attribute for an author because it helps their audience get sucked into the story and not wanting to put the book down. One example of this comes from the novel The Grapes of Wrath……

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans is a policy that was developed in order to ensure the health and wellness of the citizens of the United States. However, due to inept scientific research and evidence, these initial guidelines not only led to increased rates of obesity, but also the chronic diseases resulting from it causing millions of dollars in preventable healthcare costs. Despite revisions every 5 years and updated science, the government still writes the guidelines based on a “one size fits all” mentality. The future of the guidelines needs to be in evidence based science but on the level of the individual needs of the…
