Skiing Perseverance
Having grown up in the Tahoe-Truckee area, participation in athletics and other team activities have taken up a vast majority of my fifteen years, and helped me find a variety of things I am passionate about. Though I am remarkably ardent about anything I embark in, skiing has always reigned victorious to all others. My participation in skiing has alluded me an outlet to escape from whatever outside sources weighed me down, and has given me the opportunity to meet a multitude of benevolent people while traveling in exemplary places. Participation in Squaw Valley Snow Sports has taught me a variety of lessons that I not only utilize on the mountain, but in my day to day life. Perseverance is one of the main skill I have gained through my participation in Squaw Valley Snow Sports. Ski racing, as a whole, is filled with high and low moments, and I believe without the low moments one wouldn't appreciate the glorious highs. I apply this perspective throughout my whole life and use it to motivate myself to be a better student, athlete, and whole person. I am currently recovering from ACL surgery, and I am fairly positive that without SVSS I wouldnt not be as dedicated to returning to snow as strong as possible. …show more content…
It is heartening to be surrounded with a multitude of different people, with different personalities, who all share a common passion. When I injured myself, I received an inconceivable amount of support from not only SVSS, but the entire ski racing community. I cannot imagine where I would be without SVSS, but I know through my participation I will continue growing as both a person and

The first time I experience grit was when I first went skiing for my first time at Sundown, which is a ski resort near Dubuque. At first I did not like skiing, because I would always fall, but I was determined to be a good skier. By my second time at Sundown I started to get the hang of it. By my third night I could go down all the hills in a controlled manner, then I started to really enjoy skiing. I then found out if I keep on working and try my hardest on something it will always pay off in the end. Grit made me take something I dislike, and made it into one of my favorite things to do in the winter. Today I have been skiing for over 3 years. Even after I hurt my back skiing 2 years ago, I still went back the next year.…

The issue of whether or not our lifestyles are environmentally and economically sustainable has been the source of an ongoing debate and prompted an opinionative piece with an accompanying photograph by Paul Evans, “Skiing into Oblivion” (March, 2008). Contending in a predominately concerned and passionate tone, Evans argues that our consumption of the planet’s resources is irresponsible and that we are becoming increasingly motivated by the need to attain unrealistic lifestyles driven by consumerism. However, he also encourages his audience to take action through the use of emotive language, saying that “it is still possible to change direction and take a conservationist route.”…

Ice Hockey has played an instrumental role in shaping the person I have become. As a youth ice hockey program at the University of Delaware, I was not impressive. I lacked the basic skills that other skaters my age had already mastered. However, as an athlete, I had heart. Additionally, my father taught me to dig deep within myself, and never give up, because what I had cannot be taught by any coach. Wisdom I use every day. Although, ice hockey gave me confidence I would otherwise not have, digging deep within myself to succeed, has opened the door to my academic future. Through hard work and determination, my goals are now within reach. I am a senior at Salesianum beginning another varsity ice hockey season. Loyalty to my teammates, academic achievement, and community service continue to shape me. Youth ice hockey at the University of Delaware was the beginning of something great and influenced the man I have become.…

Running those ten miles every day on nothing but the strength of will, epitomizes my true character and hunger for challenge in life. It is hard to imagine life without one having to face any challenges. A lot of the challenges we face as human beings are similar but what makes each person different is the way we face our challenges. Some people shy away from challenges and then there are others who do not push themselves to their limits and reach short of their goals. Then there are others that are able to overcome some of the challenges but eventually back down because they can not take the heat. I, on the other hand consider myself a fighter, someone who does not back down from life’s hardships and strive to fulfill my goals.…
