Acknowledgements

First and foremost I offer my sincerest gratitude to my teachers who has supported me throughout my report, with his patience and knowledge. I attribute the level of my bachelor degree to his encouragement and effort and without him this report, too would not have been completed or written. One simply could not wish for a better or friendlier .
The authors also wish to thank the other faculty members , for their valuable suggestions and directions.
I am also indebted to the many countless contributors to the Internet, online optical fiber community, PDF file editors, Microsoft office for providing the numerous documents and tools I have used to produce both my report, data and figure.
Department of Electronics and Communications has provided the support I have needed to produce and complete my seminar report.
I also thanks for my batch mates for providing constant

    Copper vs Fiber

With the advancement of technology, there have been numerous inventions and discoveries. The latest one has been that of Fiber optic cables, which have gained more respect in the market than the copper cables. These cables are widely used in offices or residential areas. Copper cables transmit information through electrical signals. It has been used as a speaker system wire, telephone wire, computer cable wire etc. for over years now. Optical fiber comprises of plastic or glass strands to transmit data or information digitally with the use of light rather than electricity. On the other hand, copper cable encompasses of a single thread of copper. The size of the cable varies depends upon its purpose. Sometimes, the cables are protected with the help of a covering known as braiding. The difference between copper cable and fiber optic lies here as the latter cannot transmit electricity but known for providing high theoretical performance.…

Wavelength division multiplexing (WDM), storing light beams of different wavelengths in one channel is an efficient method of storing and sending information. Different sources of light are coupled together with a multiplexer, a device that combines them into one beam of light. The beam travels through a transfer medium. The demultiplexer, usually the mirror image of the multiplexer, separates into the respective wavelengths that comprise it. In a way, multiplexing performs a function f(x) on the different beams of light and the demultiplexer performs the inverse of that function f’(x).…

It has been a decisive goal in the compilation of this thesis to make us capable of realizing the future national and regional telecommunication networks in an efficient and resource optimal way. By future telecommunication network is assumed an all-optical network where the information in transit are kept optical and not converted into the optical domain. The focus is on the scientific results achieved throughout the Ph.D. period. Five subjects – all increasing the understanding of optical networks – are studied. Static wavelength routed optical networks are studied. Management on terms of lightpath allocation and design is considered. By using statistical models (simultaneous analysis of many networks) the correspondence between parameters determining the network topology and the performance of the optical network is found. These dependencies are important knowledge in the process of designing a network. It is also seen (statistically) found that the effect of wavelength converters on the performance of static wavelength routed optical networks is negligible. Dynamic wavelength routed…
