Sci2010 Interview Notes
Neater interview notes (not in a chronological order, bits missing, please edit =D ) Gerry Rayner
Secondary/Tertiary study
-Found transition from secondary to tertiary education “abysmal”. Started BSc but dropped out after 1 year.
-Worked in telecommunications for several years but got sick of it, returned to study Science as a mature aged student.
-Completed BSc (honours) in early 1990’s as mature aged student. Had large time gap between completing Honours and PhD (in this gap he worked at N.P.A- National Parks Association, I can’t remember what his role there was though). He wouldn’t recommend this long time gap between Honours and PhD.
-As an honours student at 28-29 years old, his mentor (an Alpine ecologist) was very helpful; not just a mentor but a role-model, formed valuable relationship, had beers together etc.
- PhD supervisor (female) was also a role-model. Gerry is also inspired by teaching philosophies of people like Vince Tinto, Jean Piaget.
-His area of PhD research was in Plant ecology: Looking in aspects such as long-term climate change, how plants responded. Took 4 closely related plant species that existed in 4 different climates (arid, dry sclerophyll, temperate rainforest, cool temperate rainforest) and looking at their physiology and seeing if evolutionary pathways could tell us their past. (I didn’t completely follow this, Jess can expand ) -Best part of PhD was finishing it. Interesting work but found it incredibly busy juggling with full time work and a family. PhD involved lots of field-work, lab-work, statistics.

Recent/Current career
-Undertook plant research for a long time, would take on Honours students, but recently his focus has shifted from biological research to educational research. 1st year bio labs excellent place for educational research (large sample size of 1000 students).

-Most enjoyable part of job (other than conference dinners with free booze) includes attending conferences and meeting like-minded

Matthew is a senior at UNC who is studying business. He is twenty-three years old and was born in America. So what ties Matt to a specific culture? From the ages of 6-13 he was a resident of Quito, Ecuador, a country in South America. Studies have shown that significant growth takes place in early-mid childhood, and as Matt was growing up and developing his identity, he was embracing the culture specific to Ecuador. Matt and his family traveled to Ecuador to complete missionary work with Compassion International, therefore embracing the Christian religion, while adapting his lifestyle to both Spanish and English customs. Through a detailed interview Matt was able to provide information specific to Ecuador’s cultural values, traditions, and ways of life.…

There were many instances whereby he sacrificed his personal time and tutored me after school hours till late when nearing the A levels in the school canteen. He went through the entire ten-year series as well as various schools’ past year papers with me patiently to make sure I had more exposure to the different types of questions asked. He would also spring provoking questions to test my understanding and allowing me to reminisce the joy of discovery I had as a kid. More than just passing information, he shared his wisdom and experiences. I vividly remembered that his motto was “When everyone gives up on you, you cannot give up on yourself” This spirit encourages rather than intimidate me even though more challenges were ahead. He was always very positive about the small improvements I made and spurred me on with encouragements to continue these small steps and persevere through the A levels. Right then, it was the pat on the back that makes the difference and I overcame all psychological barriers I…

Imagining a career founded on helping people and bettering their lives puts a smile on my face. With so many diseases and events in the world, there is a need for constant innovation when it comes to medical devices and research. A solid foundation in mathematics is needed to venture into these parts of the woods, so that is why I have decided to take AP Calculus during my senior year. It is a challenge, but those limits sure do have a way of staying in your head! Mathematics is interesting because it stretches the boundaries of how hard…

I wanted a career that deals with technology, because of the constant advancements. I also love studying the human body and how it provides the functions to live day-to-day. To find a career that put the two aspects together was a perfect fit for me. I then contacted a counselor at Mott Community College to see if there was a path in the direction I wanted to head in , and there certainly was! From there I started to volunteer at Hurley Medical Center and after a few times volunteering I knew this is exactly what I want to do for the rest of my…
