Abstract (summary)
Officials say the bank is ahead on its CBS programme as over 7,500 branches out of its 13,000-plus branches are being brought under CBS. The bank when it had launched the CBS project in '02 had initially targeted 3,000 branches by the end of three years.
In '02 the bank had decided to migrate from its distributed IT system which ran on a branch solution
Bankmaster to a centralised core banking solution provided by an Australian company FNS. Insiders say there is no instance of a bank centralising transactions across 13,000 branches.
Given the sheer scale of SBI there have been hiccups. Incidentally, for its international operations SBI has opted for a different CBS package known as Finacle.

BankUSA faces the challenges of having a large call volume and being under staffed to handle that volume. In order to mitigate these challenges, BankUSA would need to hire more staff in addition to the 20 employees that are already on the payroll. With the additional employees, the bank can now divide the CSR’s into various teams to handle specific customer issues that way the calls are automatically routed to a CSR who is equipped to handle the matter at hand. With the additional employees hired, this is aid in cutting down the four minute wait time that was an issue for a caller. They emphasize the importance of keeping their customers happy on a day-to-day basis. They have established practices that are out of the norm for the banking industry. These practices include: extended hours, coffee and newspapers in the waiting lobby, inviting locations, phones in their ATM machines and even a bright-red Penny Arcade in their lobby! Through these practices Commerce’s goal has been to bring the retail experience into all of their branches. Looking at the banking industry using Porter’s Five Forces Model, it is clear that the industry is very competitive. There is a very high degree of rivalry caused by local and international banks along with credit unions which are favored by a substantial number of customers. Commerce is also facing an increasing potential of new entrants into their competition because other banks have started to assimilate their customer-centric practices. Additionally, Commerce has to face the reality of technology slowly becoming a threat in what’s evolving into a “self-service” world. As a supplier, the bank has less bargaining power than the customer due to the minimal costs involved in switching banks and the large number of banking options available to the…
