Step 2:
What was your original answer and why?
My original answer was E – We must save the rhino because it is the right thing to do. In terms of morals and etiquettes – killing is wrong, not only of people but also of animals. This was based on an intrinsic value, since god created us all. The extinction of the rhino would rapidly be followed by the loss of other endangered and threatened wildlife in Africa.
What is your current answer and why?
My current answer is still option E but based on an instrumental value because of what they can do for us.
The Rhino is an icon species and have roamed the earth for more than 50 million years. They play a central role in the functioning of ecosystems, upon which the survival of thousands of other plant and animal species depend. They also drive eco tourism and safari industries for some of the poorest communities in Africa. Horns are the rhino’s glory and curse.
Website http://msnbc.msn.com/id/10877076/ says that, "The rhinoceros population has declined by 90 percent since 1970, with five species remaining in the world today, all of which are endangered. The white and black rhinos are the only species left in Africa.” Last year, more than 1,200 rhinos were poached in South Africa alone.
Rhino extinction will create detrimental domino effects. Important ecological relationships become tattered and many that survive because of the rhino will also die. The Ancient Rhino supplies life giving nitrogen rich grass all prairie grazers need to survive.
Rhinos keep alive other species like the red-billed ox pecker while they hitch a ride on their backs, eating the ticks and other insects of them and in return these birds warn rhinos of the approaching danger.
I think we need to find a way of educating people about the impact of rhino poaching In China, myths about the curing and aphrodisiac qualities of rhino horn are held widely spread and are
