Same Love Macklemore Analysis
“You’re a faggot.” “Ew, that’s so gay.” Take a minute and think about how many times you hear these phrases on a daily basis. Slanderous terms like these are some among many other homophobic sayings that are used daily by people all over the world. Why is this? How have the terms ‘faggot’ and ‘gay’ become part of our daily vocabulary? How have these terms become synonymous with the terms ‘lame’ or ‘stupid’? With the youth of our world bred into constant hateful thoughts, the possibility for a positive outlook for our future generations is slim. Macklemore’s song and music video, Same Love, aims to point the youth in our society in a new and forward thinking direction. Macklemore, who is one of the most popular artists in today’s hip-hop industry, recognizes the issues within our society and uses his influence on people to help make a difference in the world. The goal of the song lyrics is to show Macklemore’s belief in supporting equality in the LGBT community and to also emphasize how important it is that people are respectful of and do not discriminate against them. …show more content…
Repetition of key words in the chorus help the listener really focus on the overall message that is being conveyed by the chorus of the song. “And I can’t change, even if I tried, even if I wanted to. My love, my love, my love, she keeps me warm. She keeps me warm, she keeps me warm.” The words being repeated a large amount of times are love and warm. With these words being repeated so many times within the chorus, the person listening to the song starts to pick up on how much the main character in this story really needs and loves their significant other. These words are repeated to express how love giving them everything they need in life like being warm and that if they didn’t have the warmth and love brought into their life they wouldn’t be able to continue

    McLune wrote about the discrimination of black women throughout hip-hop. The dominate rhetorical appeal used by McLune is pathos, which “is an emotional appeal that involves using language that will stair the feelings of the audience” (Hooper, etal 86). She complains about being a black woman and hearing the excuses for men when they talk about women in hip-hop and how it is just okay with society. McLune is also irate about the fact that Eve, who is a female rapper raps about women in a bad way and doesn’t seem to think that, that is not right. Another type of appeal McLune uses is logos “which demonstrates an effective use of reason and judicious use of evidence” (Hooper, etal 86). Back in the 60s it was wrong and considered unfair to demonize colored men, but yet the men in today’s society are disrespecting colored women. The author explains how record labels exploit this and benefit off of the disrespect artist show black women.     Hozier seamlessly ties in repetition and parallelism to simplify the message he is attempting to communicate. The main part of the song in which the listener can easily detect parallelism is in the third stanza: “No tired sighs, no rolling eyes, no irony/ no ‘who cares’, no vacant stares, no time for me” (7-8). Here, the word “no” is repeated to further emphasize the fact that the artist does not want to have to deal with these signs of hardship in his relationship with this new woman. Another example of repetition is Hozier’s use of the word “babe.” “Babe” is repeated in the song a total of four times. At plain sight it can be seen simply as filler word; however, the placement of the word reveals a deeper reason for its inclusion. Hozier deliberately only uses the word “babe” to start lines in which he says something negative about the relationship. The song begins with, “Babe, there’s something tragic about you” (1). Aforementioned, this line has a negative connotation to it despite beginning with a word of adoration. This creates contradiction in his writing.
