Saint Leo University Core Values and Apa Code of Conduct
Saint Leo University Core Values and APA Code of Conduct

At Saint Leo University we have a Values Statement that contains six basic core values. They are as follows; Excellence, Community, Respect, Personal Development, Responsible Stewardship, and Integrity, each with a definition of what they mean to the university. As with all core values, these are a set of standards we strive to live by. These values all have individual definitions and meanings, some of which can be subjective to most.
In these next few paragraphs I will summarize what they mean to me, excellence is a drive and passion to always do our best, in any endeavor we take on. Saint Leo`s Values Statement says “The success of our university upon a conscientious commitment to our mission, vision, and goals.” By striving for excellence these values will come can be stood by easily.
Community in the exact definition of the word is a group of people living in a particular local area. In a values statement community to me is a sense of oneness with our surroundings and the people involved, we must trust and be trust worthy. In a sense of community we have interdependence on each other, which cannot be achieved without trust.
Respect is something we should strive to show everyone in our community and abroad. Not only our elders deserve our respect but our peers and subordinates, everyone has individual strengths that should be valued. Respect alone can fill a person with a sense of esteem and confidence. Respect to me is also a feeling of regard for a person.
Personal development is about growth, not only physical but spiritual as well. We must have a balanced life that is always growing to the next best level in all fashions. If we are all growing and striving to demonstrate this, it is better for our community and the people in it.
Responsible stewardship means to me we are to be responsible and accountable to our God the creator. In the bible God says we are to be responsible stewards of

Leaders who are clear about their company’s reason for being (purpose) and who define what “good corporate citizens” look like (values) are able to deliver and sustain both performance and employee satisfaction over time. The creation of a purposeful culture—one that holds employees accountable for exceeding performance expectations while modeling the organization’s declared values—is critical for business leaders in today’s marketplace. Developing a high performance, values-aligned culture requires three integrated steps. They are: 1. Clarify performance expectations 2. Define values in behavioral terms 3. Hold leaders and staff accountable…

    Respect

Respect means a lot of different things for different people. It includes taking someone’s feelings, needs, thoughts, ideas, wishes and preferences into consideration. It also means taking all of these seriously and giving them value. In fact, giving someone respect seems similar to valuing them and their thoughts and feelings. It also includes recognizing them, listening to them, being truthful with them, and accepting them as an individual. Respect can be shown through actions and it can also be felt. We can act in many ways that are considered respectful, but we can also feel respect for someone and feel respected by someone. Because it is possible to act in ways that do not reflect how we really feel, the feeling of respect is more important than the behavior without the feeling. When the feeling is there, the behavior will naturally follow. Respect once played a important role in our daily lives and our survival. If we think of a tribe walking in the desert we can think that a person not respected by anyone would be left behind to die and that person was considered to have no importance or value in the group. In today’s time it seems much more possible- to be able to survive without being respected. Someone could, for example, inherit a large sum of money, have many workers and salesmen constantly calling him on the daily basis and catering to him, and yet not one of his workers respected him at all. Someone could also make a large amount of money through having one or more talents which are valued, such as being able to dunk a basketball or being able to sing like Whitney Houston yet that person is still disrespected, perhaps because of the way that person treats others. When we are respected we gain the voluntary cooperation of many people. We don’t have to use as much of our energy and resources trying to get our needs met. When people respect one another there are fewer conflicts and there is a lesser chance of someone not taking the other seriously. In…

When we are respected we gain the voluntary cooperation of people. We don’t have to use as much as our energy and resouces trying to get our needs met. When people respect one another there are fewer conflicts. In summary, it is for both evolutionary and practical reasons that respect is important and also why we simply feel better when we are respected. Respect seems to be like a boomerang in the sense that you must send it out before it will come back to you. Respect can not be demanded or forced, though sometimes people mistakenly believe that it can be commanded. If respecting someone means respecting their feelings and there needs, then if a person does not respect your feelings and your need then they don’t respect you at all. If those in positions of power and authority do not respect your needs and feelings, they will not earn your respect. Defining respect in three seprate dictionaries, respect is defined as a regard for or appreciation of the worth or value of someone or something. How would the world differ without respect? Respect is the act of showing someone that you value his or her feelings. Respect is a universal value…

The University has six core values that they strongly follow and teach their students. They include excellence, community, respect, personal development, responsible stewardship, and integrity. All of these values hold a very important key to success as a student, but the core value of Community helps students succeed as members of society as well as in school.
