Romeo and Juliet
“What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” Romeo and Juliet is a play by William Shakespeare that is regularly hard to understand by most. William decided to put something in his play to make it more interesting and understandable. There are three literary elements of literature that William used in his play. Dramatic Speech, Dramatic irony, and comic relief are the three elements in The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet that makes the play easier to understand. First, Dramatic speech is the use of the literary elements such as; soliloquy, aside, and monologue. Soliloquy is a lengthy speech in which a character, usually alone on stage, expresses his or her feelings that are unheard by other characters. For example, Act IV scene iii lines 14-58, “Farewell! God knows when we shall meet again...” This enables the reader to better understand the play. An aside is when a character reveals his or her true feelings that are unheard by other characters. For example, Act V scene iii lines 10-11 Paris states, “I am almost afraid to stand alone here in the churchyard; yet I will adventure.” This helps the audience understand the play. A monologue is a lengthy speech by one person addressed to other characters. For example, Act III scene ii lines 97-127, by Juliet, “shall I speak ill of him that is my husband?...” This also helps the reader understand the play better. Secondly, Dramatic irony is a contradiction between what a character thinks and says and what the audience or reader knows is true. For example, Act V scene iii lines 92-96 Romeo states, “Death, that hath sucked the honey of thy breath…” Romeo talks of Juliet’s death, but yet he does not know she is only sleeping. The audience has already known that Juliet took Friar Lawrence’s sleeping potion to skip the wedding of her and Paris so she can be with her love Romeo. The audience knows more than the character. Finally, Comic relief is a technique used to interrupt a serious scene by introducing a humorous character or situation. It helps balance emotional suspense with laughter and wit. For example, Act I scene iv lines 49-114. Romeo states to Mercutio, “I dreamt a dream tonight.” Romeo was full of fear because he had dreamt he was going to die. Mercutio told Romeo he must have been visited by Queen Mab, the faeries midwife that controls dreams. The mood changed and everyone laughed as if a joke. Dramatic speech, Dramatic irony, and Comic relief are the three elements of literature that enable the audience to better understand The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. Dramatic speech is the use of soliloquy, aside, and monologue. Dramatic irony contradicts what a character thinks and what the audience knows. Then, Comic relief interrupts a serious scene by introducing a humorous character or situation. William Shakespeare used these three elements to help keep his play interesting but still understandable.

Dramatic irony is something in which characters do not know something, but the reader or audience knows what the true reality is. According to some researchers, “A staple of Elizabethan and Shakespearean drama was dramatic irony” (Halio 25).     One reason that the parents cause the tragic deaths in the play is how they have been feuding with each other for many years. As the tragic play opens, Sampson and Gregory, two Capulet’s, walk the streets of Verona talking about the Montague’s. Sampson exclaims, “I / will push Montague’s men from the wall and thrust his / maids to the wall” (1.1.15-17). This expresses the utter most hate that the two families have for each other. It is obvious that the parents are to blame from this instance because if they did not feud with one another, then it would not be a problem for Romeo and Juliet to fall in love. Also, if the families had not been fighting, the fight between their servants, Sampson, Gregory, and Abram, would never have happened. This brawl led to amplified hate because it brought back age-old problems the reader is uninformed of. The actions in the play cause a domino effect, and in other words, if one action did not happen, the ones afterwards would not either. For example, if the fight in the streets of Verona did not happen, then Benvolio would not have had to break it up, bringing Tybalt into the mess. The fight that started in the beginning of the play was initiated with an ancient feud between the Montague’s and the Capulet’s. The next reason the parents are to blame for the deaths in the final scenes of the tragic play is because they force Juliet into marrying Paris. Juliet’s father angrily explains, “Be fettle your fine joints ‘gainst Thursday next/ to go with Paris to Saint Peter’s church, / or I will drag thee on a hurdle there” (3.5.158-160). Being pressured into becoming the wife of Paris, Juliet felt upset and exploited. She begs at her father’s knees in an attempt to change his relentless mind. The mixed feelings of her undying love for Romeo and her distress in doing something she does not want to do cause her to solicit advice from Friar Lawrence.
