Many ancient, significant structures still exist today. For example, the Roman Colosseum, built between 70 and 72 AD, still stands today. It is a very important building as it symbolizes the past glory, of the city, known for its architecture and gladiator games. Its architectural engineering is one of the main components, that has helped it survive and live out its legacy. Under the reign of Emperor Vespasian, the construction was completed by 80 AD. The Colosseum quickly became a symbol and an important part of Roman life. The location of the Colosseum played an essential part in it’s legacy as well. For example, many courthouses, in America, include Roman culture or architecture. One of the most famous courthouses, located in our capital of Washington, D.C., called the U.S. Supreme Court Building incorporates features of Roman culture. This building was designed by Cass Gilbert, who completed the the constriction in 1935 (“Influence of Roman Architecture” par. 9). It uses the Roman Temple style, which includes a formal staircase and a raised podium (“Influence of Roman Architecture” par. 9). The U.S. Supreme Court building, like the Roman Temples, have columns only on the front of the building. Another feature, of most of the major public buildings in Washington, D.C. is white marble. The marble is an echo of Roman architecture (“Influence of Roman Architecture” par. 9). As evidenced by the previous examples, the Roman influence extends to the architecture of some of the most important buildings in America. Besides courthouses, monuments, which were popular among Roman architecture, also had an important influence on American culture. For example, in New York City, there is the Washington Square Arch gained from the tradition of Roman Triumphal Arches (“Influence on Roman Architecture” par. 9).
