This non-profit organization uses both rhetorical and symbolic means of galvanizing its membership. Rhetorically, the Boys and Girls Club has celebrated its volunteers and members alike. In the artifacts shown, the Club has verbally and publicly celebrated the people that make the organization great. They have vocalized how thankful they are for their volunteers in the APD and “Volunteer Spotlight” posts. The club has also showcased the members of the club by celebrating the kids championship status and a teenage Club member’s performance. The Club does not only galvanize its membership only rhetorically, but symbolically as well. In 1949 the Boys and Girls Club established a program to recognize the outstanding achievements of Club Teens.…
One of the main focuses of this class was rhetorical situation and analysis and I feel that this was the main area of growth for me throughout the semester. Walking into college and English-103, I only had a very vague idea of what a rhetorical situation even was, now I not only know how to identify it in various works, but also incorporate elements of it into my own essays and papers. In my video critique of the animated film The Ductators, I spend the vast majority of the paper summarizing the film but when I reach the second to last paragraph, I begin to rhetorically analyse the propaganda cartoon. At this point in the year I had already become comfortable with these topics and give examples such as “Apart from a few quick political references,…
Brandon's dad was glad he got to chat with you during Back to School Night again this year. We know Brandon has spoken with you a few times concerning his tests and quizzes. His dad and I are very concern with Brandon's latest quiz results and how his grade has been plummeting. We see his work, and see that he does fine, when it comes to understanding his AP Calculus homework. We also see him putting in numerous hours studying for the AP Calculus class tests and quizzes, but yet he is doing very poorly on them. We are surprised considering he maintained an A or A- in all his high school math courses, including Algebra 2 with you. We did not think he would do worse in AP Calculus.…
This Rhetorical analysis essay was very difficult for me to get started but once I did I made many changes before I came into class with my first draft. I started by making a web trying to get my ideas onto paper so that it would eventually make it easier to organize into a paper. I have a hard time with organization so I thought pulling quotes and basic ideas I wanted to bring up in this essay would make it flow a little better. I started out by using the Faigly book to and looking at the layout for how to write a rhetorical analysis. After that I answered all the questions, which then inevitably got put into the outline to help further get my points across. The thing that helped me the most was only writing a little bit at a time rather…
A. The rhetorical situation is the expected context and circumstance surrounding the written piece of work. Without this situation, there would be no actual purpose to the writing. The rhetorical situation actually pieces together different structural elements of the work—like the occasion, purpose, topic, audience, and voice. The occasion is usually time-restrictive. For instance, a person may be chosen to write a very specific paper around Christmas time based on the history of related carols, or the holiday joy. The purpose is the reason for writing the essay; the reason that the writer is taking the time out of their busy schedule to write this essay. The topic is the subject of the paper, like whether it is about “How You Feel about Writing”, or about the baby seals dying in Alaska. The audience is who the paper will be written to and read by. Language used in the essay should be changed based on the audience—for instance, large and complex words will not be used in an essay to be read by fourth and fifth graders. Voice is the element that the writer uses to get their message across as clear as possible; whether slang or jargon is used, and what tense and “person” it should be written in.…
PROMPT: After reading the article “To Tell or Not To Tell?” by Mary Kate Frank, write an essay in which you address the question, To Tell or Not To Tell? and argue why it is important to tell when a person’s health or safety is at stake. Support your position with evidence from the text.…
1. An audience in the beginning of choosing my audiences I think to include all majors in my audience. But through the semester I found that most of students from different majors under the engineering department exact the petroleum engineering. (270)…
I sat in my sophomore english class, as time ticked away on the clock behind me. I’d written for the first 30 minutes of our in class essay, and, looking down in despair, realized that my paper was far from cohesive. Although my paper had several interesting ideas and analyzations about the book, I hadn't exactly answered the prompt. As the student next to me pushed back her seat to turn in her paper, I knew there was no way to turn mine around and get it to the place it needed to be. The ideas swirling around my head told me to just keep writing, that the more I would have on paper, the easier my teacher would grade, but of course I knew that wasn’t the case. As the bell rang to go onto forth period, I stood up and…
The last writing piece I did was my college essay. It was my final essay in High school which was probably a year ago. My teacher used to always write me comments on the margins of the papers so I can fix them and make them look better. The only type of writing that I could count as writing is texting, I don’t really like to write but texting is much easier for me. The form of writing that I usually like to go with or use when I feel when I feel a creative impulse is the figurative form of writing, because it usually gives my writing an overtone and makes it more interesting. I feel lost every time I sit down to write because I can never figure out a way to start my writing piece. What I like about my writing is my honest, truthful and persuasive way in delivering facts and thoughts of my own and of others. What I see as occasional or recurring problems in my writings is the failure to not use enough adjectives which results in me having to write more than what’s needed; in order for me to explain my thoughts and that causes me to lose my train of thoughts and ideas. I remember a specific writing experience that left me with a failure in the beginning of my junior year at high school. My teacher assigned us to write a persuasive essay regarding a social problem that effected a community, and I decided to go with the Palestine-Israeli conflict. Due to my decision of choosing this touchy and very debatable topic, I had to research a whole lot and learn more about it. This way I can deliver my idea in the best method possible. However, after getting my paper back it said I had an 89% and that made me feel disappointed in myself.…
My biggest accomplishment in this class is improvement in writing, and I plan to focus on editing on grammar for the remaining weeks. In the past few weeks, I learned how to write papers faster and more effectively. Previously, I was a slow and weak writer. I took more than two hours to write a page, which meant I took over four hours to finish a full paper. Thus, it was stressful when I took diagnostics and midterm. Although I took a long time to write, I still did not write a strong paper. The reason is that I did not brainstorm before I started writing. Now, I write paper faster because I write down everything that I want to talk about first, without caring about grammar. I wrote down all the evidences and quotes, and then I organize them…
2. Learn, understand, and implement the rhetorical “triangle” of writer, reader, and subject—elements necessary for any rhetorical situation. Students will also learn how to change their approach and emphasis according to rhetorical aim.…
I have had many experiences throughout my academic studies that improved my overall writing ability. What I thought to be my worst experience became one of my most memorable and teachable moments. As I was approaching the end of my junior year we were instructed to write a critical lens paper. My English teacher persistently reminded us this was not an essay to be done at the last minute. I was unfamiliar with this assignment and at first glance it seemed fairly easy. With that in mind, I decided to hold off and focus my attention on other courses. As the due date was approaching, nerves set in. I immediately began working on a rough draft. The critical lens final was due Monday, giving me only the weekend to complete it. I worked diligently…

When Sarah McLaughlin’s “In the Arms of an Angel” plays, it keeps you crying and wishing for that last teary-eyed puppy to come live with you. When the chubby old man with the deep voice and white handlebar mustache (aka Wilford Brimley) comes on TV proclaiming “Dia-beat-is is not a joke”, viewers want to donate to the nearest diabetes foundation they can get their hands on. Fifty years ago when this John F. Kennedy for President 1960 Campaign Ad aired on TV, I can’t imagine that viewer’s wouldn’t have reacted in the same passionate and dramatic way. In 1960 Massachusetts Senator John Fitzgerald Kennedy campaigned to be the President of the United States. The commercial is appealing to all voting-age Americans, promising a bright future with this fresh and handsome man as their president. The commercial ran through pictures of the president, his family, and eager supporters. A song that tells about voting for “Kennedy, Kennedy, Kennedy, Kennedy, Kennedy, Kennedy, Kenn-ed-y” is persuasively playing in the background. The commercial borrows some of JFK’s personal attributes as well; he had his fair share of quirks. At forty-three years of age he would become the youngest President ever to be in office. He was also Catholic unlike any of the thirty-four presidents before him. JFK and his wife Jacqueline Bouvier were also more than just political figureheads, they were celebrities that the whole nation welcomed and enjoyed. With all this in mind, the Kennedys shared values and hopes like the rest of Americans; the Kennedy Administration knew this well and created this commercial and accompanying song that directly personified the ideals of the rest of the country. Through the logical use of word repetition, appeal to the exigence that voters face, and embodiment of the American Dream commonplace the John F. Kennedy for President 1960 Campaign Ad correctly uses Rhetorical techniques and proves to Americans why JFK would be the best president.…
