Literature over the years has been one of the most important subjects. It teaches new things and gives us a lesson that we could put in practice in our daily life. In the story ‘The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allan Poe, the author uses settings, symbolism and first person to show the theme of a man who seek salvation through revenge. One of the literature elements the author use to prove his point is setting. Since the vocabulary is hard to comprehend, setting helps us to understand more clearly the story. The story is set in a city, which the name is not mentioned but they are celebrating the festivities of Carnival. A guy named Fortunato has offended Montresor, the protagonist, and he takes the “night and drunkenness” of the “Carnival” to take Fortunato to his palace by a lie in order to get revenge. “Supreme madness” it related to the evil thoughts that Montresor may have in his own head. “Carnival” is the one of the setting the author used to illustrate how Montresor believed it would be a good place to get revenge and to show the desire of execute Fortunato.
The catacombs chosen by the author is another example of setting, because Montresor plays with the mind of Fortunato. “You are man to be missed, your health is precious.” By this, Montresor try to be a good man and pretend that he really cares about Fortunato health but he does not mean it. He says in a sarcastic way that convinces Fortunato “Lets go on”. “This walls had been lined with humans remains and we had passed through arches” this gives us a sense how the tone of the story started to get intense and give a sense of frightening towards the setting as well. It also let as know that the climax of the story will come soon. “Catacombs seemed to have been constructed for no especial use within itself and it is depth.” Montresor has taken fortunato to the place where he is going to conclude his mission of revenge.
