Revenge
Literature over the years has been one of the most important subjects. It teaches new things and gives us a lesson that we could put in practice in our daily life. In the story ‘The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allan Poe, the author uses settings, symbolism and first person to show the theme of a man who seek salvation through revenge. One of the literature elements the author use to prove his point is setting. Since the vocabulary is hard to comprehend, setting helps us to understand more clearly the story. The story is set in a city, which the name is not mentioned but they are celebrating the festivities of Carnival. A guy named Fortunato has offended Montresor, the protagonist, and he takes the “night and drunkenness” of the “Carnival” to take Fortunato to his palace by a lie in order to get revenge. “Supreme madness” it related to the evil thoughts that Montresor may have in his own head. “Carnival” is the one of the setting the author used to illustrate how Montresor believed it would be a good place to get revenge and to show the desire of execute Fortunato.
The catacombs chosen by the author is another example of setting, because Montresor plays with the mind of Fortunato. “You are man to be missed, your health is precious.” By this, Montresor try to be a good man and pretend that he really cares about Fortunato health but he does not mean it. He says in a sarcastic way that convinces Fortunato “Lets go on”. “This walls had been lined with humans remains and we had passed through arches” this gives us a sense how the tone of the story started to get intense and give a sense of frightening towards the setting as well. It also let as know that the climax of the story will come soon. “Catacombs seemed to have been constructed for no especial use within itself and it is depth.” Montresor has taken fortunato to the place where he is going to conclude his mission of revenge. Poe gives these brilliants examples of the setting and it allows the

The story starts out with Montresor running into Fortunato, his enemy who has irreparably insulted him, at a carnival. “The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as best I could, but when he ventured upon insult I vowed revenge” (pg. 236). Carnivals put on performances, just as Montresor puts on a show for Fortunato by portraying that they are friends when, in reality, Montresor is plotting out his revenge for him. The setting then moves to the catacombs of the Montresors, where he lures Fortunato with the hope of getting a flagon of Amontillado. Montresor also puts on a show by continuously trying to get Fortunato to turn around, saying he can go get Luchesi, Fortunato’s competition in the wine business, and by mentioning repeatedly his concern for Fortunato’s health. “Come,” I said, “we will go back; your health is precious….Besides, there is Luchesi-” (pg. 238) He makes the reader picture the catacomb as dark, never ending, and deathly by saying, “The vaults are insufferably damp. They are encrusted with nitre” (pg. 237). Poe creates this nightmare of “the innermost recess of the catacombs” by describing the bones and intermingled puncheons (pg. 238).…

The story’s setting begins around dusk, one evening during the carnival season in an unnamed city, where everyone is dressed in costumes. The setting quickly changes from the carnival’s activities to the damp, dark, nitre and skeleton filled catacombs under Montressor 's home, which helps to establish the sinister atmosphere of the story. The “The Cask of Amontillado” is told in first person by the narrator Montresor which is mainly conveyed in the narrator’s monologue, and the dialogue between Montresor and Fortunato. Poe uses metaphoric instances to foreshadow and amuse the reader. When Fortunato is introduced he is symbolically dressed as a fool during the festival, and becomes one as Montresor leads Fortunato to his doom. Montresor uses reverse psychology throughout the story to achieve his goal of revenge, implicitly using another regarded wine connoisseur Luchesi, to persuade Fortunato into coming with him, and repeatedly used to empower Fortunato to continue into the depths of the catacombs. Another instance of Montresor’s genius using reverse psychology is when he stated “I had told them that I should not return until the morning, and had given them…

An internal conflict of pride is a major element to the story. Fortunado thinks of himself on being a connoisseur of fine wine. The thought of Montressor seeking outside help in Luchresi for a wine tasting practically infuriates Fortunado. “Luchresi cannot tell Amontillado from Sherry.” (Poe 101) This causes Fortunado to be easily manipulated into following Montressor deep into his family vaults underneath his home. Fortunado’s pride even causes him to ignore his own health as moves deeper into the catacombs, “the cough is a mere nothing; it will not kill me. I shall die of a cough.” (Poe 102) The pride in Fortunado ultimately leads to Montressor fulfilling his plot of revenge to the point of Fortunado walking into his own resting place. “It was in vain that Fortunado, uplifting his dull torch, endeavored to pry into the depth of the recess.” (Poe 104) Montressor’s pride is shown when he finally corners Fortunado and locks him up before he lays bricks, blocking him in the recess. “I will first render you all the little attentions in my power.” (Poe 104) He finally is satisfied with the preceding outcome that he finally…

“We came at length to the foot of the descent, and stood together on the damp ground of the catacombs of the Montressors.” (Poe) This setting marks the beginning of the journey to reach the crypt where the Amontillado supposedly was. The description of the walls, the human bones, the damp and moist feeling of the catacombs, all come together to give the reader a sense of suspense and fear. “We passed through walls of piled bones, with casks and puncheons intermingling into the inmost recesses of the catacombs.” (Poe) The descriptions of the crypt create the atmosphere of the revenge and make the reader double think why would someone store wine in a place like that. “Its walls had been lined with human remains, plied to the vault overhead, in the fashion of the great catacombs of Paris. Three sides of this interior crypt were still ornamented in this manner, from the fourth the bones had been thrown down, and lay promiscuously upon the earth, forming at one point a mound of some size.” (Poe) This is where it was chosen for Fortunato to pay for his insults. The allegedly nitre in the air, and the Medoc Fortunato had drank; made him clueless and defenseless once he was in place to be chained up. At the end Fortunato was left to rot and cynically to rest in…

“The Cask of Amontillado” is a story of revenge, but the author never told exactly what Fortunato did. Montresor presents us with only a vague understanding of his motivations, and his pretense of good will and careful manipulation of Fortunato indicates the care with which he has planned Fortunato’s death. Both of the men want the same thing. Edgar Poe has a strong way of reproducing great literary elements in the story; the theme of revenge is explained with the use of irony.…

Edgar Allan Poe did an excellent job portraying in this story a timeless problem which everybody has confronted or will be confronted with, revenge. What Poe leaves to the imagination is what did Fortunato do to Montresor that has him so filled with anger and vengeance. From one line in the story, the reader can only guess the severity of the wrong. The line is 88 and it is Montresor talking to Fortunato and he said, "You are rich, respected, admired, beloved; you are happy, as once I was." Poe slips this line in subtly, but it is a line which leaves the reader guessing if it was Fortunato who took all that away from Montresor. Other than that, Poe wrote a gripping and addicting story in The Cask Of…

First of all, Poe constructs his suspenseful and frightening mood through his use of imagery. His description of the catacombs intrigues his readers. For example, the writer said that the chamber had “damp ground” (Poe 347) and “long walls of piled skeletons, with casks and puncheons intermingling” (Poe 348). It gives the readers a clear image of the passageway for readers to imagine. Also the description of the sounds that the narrator was hearing appeals to his readers. After chaining up Fortunato and while putting…
