Reputation the Cruicble

In Arthur Miller's famous play The Crucible, lies and accusations of witchcraft drive the village of Salem to uncover what each character values the most, that is reputation. Almost everyone in the play cares about their reputation. weather its with the village or with the lord. Reputation is on of the themes presented in the play. Abigail Williams, accused of being seen dancing with the devil, confesses her friends names to the court in order to save herself from being deemed a witch. She says "I want to open myself! . . . I want the light of God, I want the sweet love of Jesus! I danced for the Devil; I saw him, I wrote in his book; I go back to Jesus; I kiss His hand. I saw Sarah Good with the Devil! I saw Goody Osburn with the Devil! I saw Bridget Bishop with the Devil” Abigail was given a chance to either save her friends or save her reputation, She Chose her reputation over the lives of her so called "friends".Throughout the play, she tells lies, manipulates her friends and the entire town, and eventually sends nineteen innocent people to their deaths. Another who is after reputation is Judge Danforth, he was a judge at the witch trials who trades in the lives of others for being a reputable judge in Boston.In his eyes the judges are always right “A person is either with this court or he must be counted against it".By accusing all 72 victims of witchery, Danforth hopes to promote his position as a judge and increase his chances of becoming a respected judge in Salem. He didn't even bother to go thouraly go over the testimonies of the ‘witches’ that appeared before him; Without hesitation he convicts all 72 victims. John Proctor, a farmer outside the small village of salem has a lie that he is afraid to come out scared for his reputation with the society of salem, Because of his affair with Abigail who to point out is just a teenager which in my mind is worse then "witchcraft".Proctor is frightened to expose such a thing as his
