This quote encapsulates the essence of changing the focus of the mathematics tutorial to action rather than just solving and writing either alone or in small groups. Although, students do not always appreciate the journey to a solution, particularly an incorrect one, this navigation is where learning is occurring. Aspects of Bloom's Taxonomy of Cognitive Levels and Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences are utilised in the conducting of this new format tutorial session.…

Marilyn Burns, the author of the article "Nine Ways to Catch Kids Up" realizes that a handful of students are at risk in each classroom. Burns came into this realization after talking with a student named Paul about multiplication. She discusses three issues that are essential to teaching mathematics. This includes helping students make the connections among mathematical ideas, to build the new information on the student's previous learning foundation, and to accompany correct answers with an explanation.…

The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) have affected the teaching of mathematics and science in several ways. In transitioning from No Child Left Behind to CCSS there have been two main changes that are responsible for affecting how teachers deliver mathematics and science instruction. With these new standards, there has been a shift in curriculum focus and a shift in the types of assessments used. These changes have greatly affected the lessons and teaching techniques used at all grade levels.…

Mathematics is a content area that students will encounter every year of the academic lives. Basic mathematical skills are taught beginning in kindergarten, and the mathematical content skills increase in rigor and complexity as students move up to the next grade. To help students become successful mathematicians within and beyond the classroom, educators need to be knowledgeable of effective strategies applicable to the mathematical content being taught. As students are expected to learn and apply new found knowledge, educators should be held to the same expectation. The Base Ten Number System and Operations: Multiplication and Division course at Walden University has provided the opportunity for learning and applying effective mathematical strategies while creating a better understanding of improving my classroom instruction to meet the individual needs of my students.…

As 21st Century learners, students in my math classes will not only learn formulas for solving math problems, but they will also learn how to find those formulas and develop critical thinking and problem solving strategies using technology made available to them through our school district. Every student will be given the opportunity to use technological resources such as calculators, overhead projection systems, Smart boards, and computer programs, including but not limited to, interactive and math resource internet sites such as Algebra.com and CoolMath.com. These sites are excellent resources for math students - enabling them to fine tune their computation skills and assist them in correctly identifying and working with various mathematical formulas.…
