Equality is ensuring individuals or groups of individuals are treated equally and fairly and less favourable, specific to their needs including areas of race, gender, disability, religion/belief, sexual orientation and age. This means in my work place whilst working with the children I treat them all fairly and equally and have no favourites. I ensure all children have equal access to opportunities and ensure I remove discrimination and bullying from the setting. I do this by following our equal opportunities policy and anti- bullying policy. An example of me doing this is I work with a geek child and his mother who do not always understand everything I say but to make sure they get the same information as the other parents and nothing is missed or confused at handover time I type small clear notes of what the child has done so Mum can read it when she goes home as she often can’t understand with the noise and at home time. When I have had one to one time with mum she has told me this is works well for her.
Diversity is to recognise, respect and value peoples differences to contribute and realise their full potential by promoting an inclusive culture. I do this in my work place by providing stories that reflect a variety of homes and cultures, acknowledging and celebrating festivals from different faiths and cultures, by inviting people from diverse parts of the community into the setting, introducing different traditional foods at snack time also by providing music and instruments from different cultures. I also ensure I improve my knowledge and understanding of different beliefs cultures and disabilities and ensure I promote them effectively.
Discrimination is when we treat people unfairly due to prejudice we have a preconceived opinion on what people are like because of a group they belong to ie sex, age, race, culture, religion or a learning disability. In my workplace it could mean I treat girls differently from boys or assume they can’t do something due to their age. In my work place I promote anti-discriminatory practise by promoting positive images of people from different cultures, race, sex and encouraging all children to explore these roles i.e. in the role play regardless of gender etc. If a child in my setting was discriminated against by another child for example he can’t play with dolls because he is a boy I would simply explain to the children that they are allowed to play with whatever toy they please and that is not just boys that play with dolls I would encourage them to think about dads, papas or uncles that look after babies and explain it’s not just for girls. If it was a parent or staff member who was discriminating a child I would explain that we have an anti-discriminatory policy at this nursery and that behaviour is not accepted and I would report the matter to my manager. Rights are our entitlement to have something the rights of the child enforce laws and ensure children are not exploited and are treated fairly. Children in my care have the right to be treated fairly and with dignity to make their own choices they have the right to live free from abuse. This affects my workplace as when carrying out my work I make risk assessment’s to ensure they are kept safe. We have policies to ensure they are treated with dignity and respect. It is my duty to report any infringement on the children’s rights to my manager if I do not it is considered that I am promoting poor practise. Possible conflicts and dilemmas that may arise in relation to a service users rights is I could be doing story time and all the children are sitting down but one child does not want to I must not force this child to sit down as he must have the choice on what activities he does and does not do this causes a dilemma as some of the other children may decide they don’t want to do it either I will deal with this by encouraging the other children to join in and provide a different activity for the service user who does not want to participate. Another example of this is a child refusing to eat their lunch at the table and will only eat whilst playing although this will cause conflict the child has a right to eat their lunch and I must meet their individual needs.
Service users and carers have the right to complain about their care we have a complaint procedure which is to in first instance to speak to the child’s key worker who will address it with the manager. If they feel that there compliant has not been satisfied they must put it in writing and bring it to the attention for the manager. After this if the parent/ carer is still unhappy they are encouraged to contact the local care commission. Staff members must record any form of complaint whether its verbally or written they must date it and then record any action taken all this information will be kept in a locked cabinet in the office following our confidentiality procedure. It is my responsibility to support a service user in their complaint giving them appropriate contacts to carry it out and to inform them of our complaint procedure. Parents are notified of this when enrolling in the nursery.

Diversity is to respect everyone's differences, regardless of race, nationality, age, religion, culture, gender, beliefs, ability and talent. Each person is an individual, and by respecting this people can be valued on their contributions, and not subject to negative response due to their differences. Respecting and embracing peoples differences will allow for a better working environment, and will make everyone feel more happy. Diversity is important in the work place, as staff are employed on there previous accomplishments and job skill, their personal differences do not effect the recruitment decision. Where I work we have different staff members from all round the world, with different culture's, beliefs and gender, yet we all work together as a team, and every is treats each other with respect.…
