“The Cask of Amontillado”:

Analyzing Short Stories and Novels:

-Plot:

1) In “The Cask of Amontillado”, the exposition is the part where Montresor is relating to the incidents from 50 years ago when he got his revenge against Fortunato. The rising action occurs whenever Montresor lures Fortunato away from the carnival and tricks him to go into the catacombs. The climax occurs whenever Montresor mentions Luchesi, and Fortunato calls him an ignoramus. Then, Montresor chains Fortunato up in the darkest depths of the catacombs. The falling action occurs whenever Montresor is blocking Fortunato in the wall. The resolution occurs when Montresor finishes by saying that he murdered Fortunato and his body has remained within the bricked room for the past 50 years. 2) The complication in “The Cask of Amontillado” occurs whenever Montresor tries to lure Fortunato into the catacombs, but he does this by exciting Fortunato about the rare wine; the Amontillado. This builds suspense because Poe wants to audience to guess whether or not Fortunato will take the bait hidden in the discussion of the Amontillado, and; of course, he does.

3) The complication puts Montresor’s plan into action. By luring Fortunato into the catacombs, he has him right where he wants him.The complications are very emotional and intellectual, because Montresor’s plan was very intricate and required quite some planning and charisma to lure Fortunato away from the carnival and into the catacombs. However, the emotional aspect yields to the state in which he committed these actions. It was out of an angered state of mind, because Montresor wanted revenge because of the way Fortunato wronged him. The main conflict is more between sharply differentiated good and evil, because even though the narrator (Montresor) commits a

From the beginning of both stories, the setting is very gloomy. In “The Cask of Amontillado,” the narrator, Montressor, starts off by telling the reader that he has been insulted by his acquaintance, Fortunado and must seek revenge. This foreshadowing gives hints to the reader that some kind of revenge, in this case death, is going to take place later on in the story.…

This article describes the emotional aspects of Montresor, the protagonist in Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Cask of Amontillado.” While Montresor seems uncaring and without emotion as he is murdering Fortunato for the insults against his family, Montresor is not as ruthless as he seems. He shows care and concern for his victim in that he gives Fortunato numerous chances to escape his fate by suggesting they head back on account of Fortunato’s cough. He also calls Fortunato my friend and good friend six times as the article points out. In the end, Montresor does…

In “The Cask of Amontillado,” Poe engages the reader by using point of view to emphasize the untrustworthiness of Montresor's, the narrator’s, character. For example, when Montresor had described how Fortunato had inflicted him with “[a] thousand injuries” and “ventured upon insult”, “[Montresor] vowed revenge” (1). This is the moment when the reader first experiences his unreliability as a narrator. Montresor had never specified the copious wounds that he had supposedly suffered from Fortunato and the severity of his offense. Furthermore, when Montresor had voiced out that Fortunato had ventured, in order words proceed with knowledge of risks, he had let bias trickle into his words. Us, the readers do not know whether or not Fortunato had intentionally insulted Montresor with malicious intentions, but in Montresor’s phrasing of words, it implies that he did indeed intended to do so. This not only makes the reader question the extent of exaggeration that Montresor inserts into his statements, but the reliability of the narrator as the story progresses. In addition, after Montresor had successfully, albeit reluctantly, finishes burying Fortunato in the alcove, he remarks: “My heart grew sick—on account of the dampness of the catacombs” (9). Here, one can see that Montresor had almost a moment in which he had felt guilt, yet had been quick to disregard it to the scenery. The dash indicated that Montresor added the latter portion onto his thoughts as more of an afterthought, rather than a…

Andrew Carnegie is a perfect example of someone who worked for everything he had. He built his fame, fortune, and respectable reputation, from the ground up. He did so by his very successful steel business that literally blew other competitors out of the industry. However, many will argue that Carnegie was a “Robber Barron” because of his smart risky actions that include buying out everything that was needed for the industry which lead to a monopoly in the steel industry. Andrew Carnegie worked from being a migrant immigrant to a very successful man. This shows pure dedication to one’s occupation. Andrew Carnegie was a captain of industry because he believed that no man should die a rich man and followed the philosophy of philanthropy. With this belief, he plowed his wealth back into society by building public libraries, donating to collages, forming the Carnegie Endowment for International peace, and much more. Carnegie was the richest man alive at one point and gave 90 percent of his wealth away. There is not a single argument that can credibly prove Andrew Carnegie as a Robber Barron.…

In 1996 another program was financed by the government, it was called American Reads Challenge. Its purpose is to help kids learn to read but help provide an environment where the entire family can better their skills in literacy if it is needed. This program definition was a child may learn to read, but if the adult cannot perform the same skills, then the cycle can continue. So in the best interest of the family would be to break that cycle and that is what the program agenda. I find it rewarding to see the government doing what it can to solve the adult literacy problem in our country. The problem still has shown no real progress I believe it can be traced to the fact we have programs but none has stood out as the standard to follow each program is base on funding which has it objective. Within these programs, the similar goal is that reading will result in a person economic growth. This should not be the only focus the change of the family culture the importance of the whole family dynamic when it comes to education.…

Similarly, Montressor in “The Cask of Amontillado” also demonstrates malice towards his victim, Fortunado, during the carefully-planned scheme. To prove this, an example can be found the time Montressor “thrusts a torch through the remaining aperture” when he almost walls up the only entrance. That is, not only has he locked Fortunado to the wall and sealed up the entrance, he also throws a torch to burn down the last exit for Fortunado to escape from death. By eliminating all the possibilities of survival once and for all, the speaker’s merciless actions are beyond imagination. Thus, Montressor in “The Cask of Amontillado” has thoroughly presents his vicious inner being when he fiercely burns another man to death. In conclusion, both the mad man and Montressor in…

Montresor and Fortunato. An example of a sensory detail in The Cask of Amontillado is the quote “There were no attendants at home.” This makes a difference in how the reader feels about where Montresor is leading Fortunato. You feel the emptiness of the house, and feel the fear of knowing that there are no witnesses to bear witness to Montresor's crime.…
