1 Why does Radio One want to acquire the 12 urban stations from Clear Channel Communications in the top 50 markets along with the nine stations in Charlotte, NC, Augusta, GA, and Indianapolis, IN? What are the benefits and risks?

After the Telecommunication act in 1996 significant consolidation occurred in the Radio Industry, thereafter Radio companies were able to obtain cost savings by acquiring multiple stations in one area and reaching economies of scale. The nation’s two biggest radio company - AMFM and Clear Channel – was just about to merge and in order to do so the FCC required them to divest 100 radio stations. This was an unprecedented growth opportunity for Radio One as 12 of these stations fitted perfectly their corporate strategy which was to „provide urban-oriented music, entertainment, and information to primarily African-Americans in as many major markets as possible”. Since under normal market conditions radio stations in the top 50 markets rarely became available for purchase, this was a perfect opportunity for Radio One to expand and implement further cost-savings through economies of scale, programming syndication, reduction of duplicate staffing and increasing advertizing revenues by becoming able to offer wider audiences and „package deals” for advertisers. This was also an opportunity to expand to new markets. Radio One’s bidding position was backed up by Chairman William Kennard’s advocacy at the FCC, which encouraged the sale of at least some stations to minorities, and since only Radio One had the experience and the capital among the potential buyers it had a strong position.

    Based on a true story, the movie Radio follows a young man named James Robert Kennedy. It opens up showing a bit of insight in his life as he walks through town with a cart avoiding eye contact, insults, and speaking to others. He gets called a moron by a man, and children are shooed away in the first few minutes. It is clear he is different from the people he is around as he walks daily with a cart full of his things and his radio. Walking past the football field like usual, he one day stumbles upon a football thrown over the fence, and when he doesn’t listen to a players demands to return it he again gets insulted called “dummy” He makes gestures by waving his hands in the air, specifically his right one, and makes no eye contact. He acts as if he cannot hear what he has been told and makes no effort to talk. He shows obvious signs of an intellectual disorder. The first incident that happens in the movie is when he is bullied and taped up, thrown in a shed by the football player who called him a dummy and some team members. When the football coach, Coach Jones, finds him he’s terrified and runs away from the crowd as fast as possible. He displays more traits of his disorder by appearing a bit socially awkward. As the movie progresses Coach Jones takes him under his wing, inviting him to practices and even noticing his infatuation with radios enough to give him the nickname Radio. Radio visits daily practices and games, and becomes a friend of much of the team. Coach Jones gets him to talk more, interact, and even begins teaching him at school in a classroom. Radio is ecstatic about sports and shows his love of his friends and school. However, Radio’s stability is questioned by residents of the town and his previous bully’s father when the death of his mother strikes and he is left alone in the home. The connection he has come to share with Coach Jones is proven after Radio’s mother dies and the coach is the only one…

    This movie is about a young man from the Anderson, SC area. The man has some difficulties in his life since he was born mentally challenged. Throughout the movie Radio (James Kennedy was his real name) befriends head football coach, Coach Jones. The first time they met in the movie was when Radio brought back a football that had been kicked over the fence a day or two earlier and Coach Jones told him he would buy him a hamburger. Then Radio started hanging around more. This is also where controversy started when the players would pick on him and play mean jokes. After football Radio went on to basketball to help out and it was more of the same from particularly one person that played both basketball and football. Radio was also granted the ability to come to school as an 11th grader and later on he was able to go as long as he wanted to. The film also shows how tough it is to be mentally challenged and to lose a parent. Coach Jones caught a lot of criticism throughout the movie taking up for Radio but he stuck through and said that as he is here more and more we can learn more and more from him just as much as he can learn from us. Eventually Coach Jones steps down from being the head coach at TL Hanna High but still kept his relationship with Radio. Towards the end of the movie is really where almost all the community gets behind Radio and supports him being there and really being a blessing to the community.…
