R & B Biography
Rhythm and blues which s also known as R&B is a genre of popular African American music that originated in the 1940’s. Georgia’s artist such as Ray Charles, Little Richard and James Brown ranked among the most influential and innovative R&B performers. The term R&B was coined as a musical marketing term in the United State in 1949 by Jerry Wexler at Billboard magazine which was then replaced with “race music.” The Grammy award for best R&B song has been awarded since 1969. From 1969 to 2000 it was known as the Grammy award for best Rhythm and Blues song. The Grammy is rewarded to the songwriters of the winning song not the performing artist.
Previous winners for the best R&B song from 1969 to date include: 1969 Sitting On the Dock of the

I fell in love with the song the first day I heard it, and when it was nominated for the Grammy’s my fingers were crossed. I am a fan of Tyrese, although I love the song ‘Shame” but first time I heard it I was not that into the song compared from the Tyrese back in the days. It took me a while before I could like the song. Jazmine Suilivan, no!! I don’t like her songs, I compare her with Melanie Fiona, they mostly sing sad songs about break up, so I am still wondering why she was nominated for a Grammy because “let it burn” had nothing special about it. I mostly listen to R&B songs from the 8o’s 90’s and early 2000’s, and D’angelo started his career in the early 90’s but I have never listened to his song from start to finish. I always skip. I don’t like his voice, when he won the Grammy I was only excited that a guy from the early 90’s can still come back and win a Grammy; otherwise I was expecting Miguel to

    Jazz Autobiography

I started dancing before I can remember, but I have been told that I was just about three. I started out at a studio that I cannot remember, doing ballet and tap. Yet, because my entire class would have been so young it can hardly be considered dance, but rather a general physical activity with friends. When I was about to turn six my entire family moved, so I changed studios to the one I am at. I still only did tap and ballet for about three years, when I started to fall behind because everyone else was taking jazz and contemporary. So when I was going to be turning nine I started jazz and contemporary. They were all so different, but they all were quite similar (except for tap, that was pretty different). When I was asked which was my favorite I could not decide because I liked them all for different reasons. I liked jazz because I now…

Rock and roll’s complex relationship to race might best be illustrated by the ways black performers “bleached” their music in order to get heard by America. Altschuler uses the term “bleaching” to describe how music was made white to be heard by white audiences and sold to white audiences. Bleaching included “selling the rights to their music or by earning royalties from record sales” to white performers (p 51). White artists would make changes to black musicians’ music and make it into number 1 hits. An example, of this is Willie Mae “Big Mama” Thornton who first recorded “Hound Dog” (p 52). According to Altschuler, Elvis Presley made some changes to the tempo and lyrics “and his version made it to number 1 on the country and R&B charts” (p52). Often independent labels would take black artists’ songs and put white pop singers on the covers or have them sing the songs. For example, Dot Records, owned by Rand Wood, had Pat Boone record “Ain’t That a Shame,” Fats Domino’s hit (p 52). Dot Records bleached “I Hear You Knockin’” an R&B song, first recorded by Smiley Lewis and Dave Bartholomew, by using Gale Storm. The bleached song made it to number 2 on the music charts (p 52). In East St. Louis, Chuck Berry performed at the…

R&B is composed of different types of rhythms. Such as gospel, jazz, country, soul, rock & roll, and hip hop. R&B has been a way for African-Americans to express their pain, and the quest for freedom and joy. Many legendary artists have come from R&B, such as Michael Jackson. Michael is known to be one of the greatest performers of all time. The 1980s brought a newer style of R&B known as Contemory R&B. It combines elements of rhythm and blues, soul, funk, pop, hip-hop and dance. Because of these many combinations, you will see a broad base of instruments. For example, the guitar, bass, keyboard, and drum. In conclusion, R&B combines wide variety of rhythms, while using a broad base of…

In 1974, Dolly Parton released “I Will Always Love You” in a response to her breakup with Porter Wagoner. Her song was a hit in the early seventies, but Whitney Houston brought out the best in the simple lyrics. Whitney Houston had one of best voices in the music industry and she was known for adding her own flavor to classic songs. Although Whitney Houston was not the original writer of “I Will Always Love You,” many people thought that this song was her original song. Nevertheless, The Body Guard would have been incomplete without the famous love ballet.…
