Qualities of a Hero
What does qualities of a hero mean? Its simple qualities of a hero are what make a hero to become a special person for someone out there in the world. Stockton’s “The Griffin & The Minor Canon” & Stone’s “Where I Find My Heroes” provide what are the qualities of a hero. Also does Mariah Carey’s “Hero” and Bulfinch’s “The Quest of the golden fleece”. The qualities of a great hero are bravery, courage, & strongness. An excellent hero needs bravery to accomplish things they want to succeed in. For example, “A Hero comes along with the strength to carry on and you cast your fears aside and you know you can survive”(Mariah Carey “Hero”1). This quote proves if you put your fears behind everything and do what you want to do you can succeed to become a better person. Another example, “People who take risks despite fears” (Oliver Stone ”Where I Find My Heroes”1). Therefore, a hero always takes risks for others and always put others before them. Also “Jason was pleased with the thought and forthwith made preparation for the expedition” (Bulfinch 105). When a hero takes risks he/she is being brave to do something they know is risky. Although, bravery is important trait courage is also. What a hero needs mostly is courage with out it they wouldn’t become heroes. If a hero doesn’t have courage they wouldn’t want to face difficult stuff. “So when you feel like hope is gone look inside you and be strong. You’ll finally see the truth that a hero lies in you”(Hero 1). This explains how when you feel down and feel like nothing is getting accomplished that you need to get some courage to see that you can do it. After, “Jason said to Medea “My Spouse… could do me one further serve take some years from my life and add them to my fathers”(Bulfinch 108). Here it proves how Jason is being courageous to spear away some years of his life for his father. Basically this means your willing to do something for someone you love and care about. “The celebrity who remains

Unlike in Beowulf, they are generally low-key doctors who work to find the panacea for the world's ills, the politicians struggling for the rights of their people, the mothers who do anything to make the lives of their children better. All heroes have significant qualities. Many have the impression that heroes are people who have done something that is "cool" or singles them out. There are countless definitions of heroes, but most people's ideas about the characteristics of a hero are fairly consistent. It is important that a hero's cause is for the "good". A hero must be courageous and intrepid, meeting obstacles without fear. They have to be willing to fight with perseverance for their cause with determination and dedication. Another especially important quality is selflessness, to do it with unselfish concern for others, not for profit. Heroes must have conviction and focus in their purpose. Many accept that the willingness to sacrifice is perhaps the most important quality of a hero, the forfeiture of something highly valued for a cause. Once these guidelines are taken into consideration, many "heroes" are excluded, such as sporting greats, politicians and war…

On the subject of heroism, Maya Angelou once wrote that “I think a hero is any person really intent on making this a better place for all people” (Angelou). The general picture that comes to mind when the word “hero” is said is the idea of Superman or Wonder Woman; however, a true hero is anyone who tries to make their world a better place. Odysseus, the hero in Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey, fought in the Trojan War and embarked on a ten year journey to return to his kingdom, Ithaca. During his quest to return home, he encounters many supernatural forces that show both his heroic, and not so heroic actions. He faces countless challenges, meets new people, and has to make sacrifices for the overall benefit of his crew (Bowler and Homer 645-705).…

Heroism is being capable of being mentally strong and has the ability to be a leader. In the poem A Man by Nina Cassian a man has lost an arm in while fighting for his country. The man knows that he “shall only be able to do things by halves.” (Line 3) Even though “the man” has lost an arm he realized that he had to “set himself to do everything with twice as much enthusiasm.” The man recognizes his limitations but still has the will in his mind to push forward and never stop living life just because of one little set back. Also, a daughter writes about her mother, Ana, who is struggling through cancer. Ana’s daughter says that even though she is going through cancer again “she gets up with a smile and still has the strength to be a mother to me.” This shows that Ana is mentally strong because she is able to care for her loved ones as for someone else they would most likely give up and not want to deal with the pain any longer, especially if they have already gone through cancer and it has come back. In addition, in the movie Mulan, the main character has to be strong and take her father’s place in the army to save his life. She has to be mentally strong to deal with all of the things that she may face when she goes to war.…

He is one that gets up, again and again, never losing sight of their dreams” (Anonymous) A real-life hero always perseveres and shows their strength by carrying on and sacrificing for the greater good. A hero does not follow the path of others and is unlike any other because of their achievements, abilities, or personal qualities. Heroism and heroes are two things that no matter what, will always be around, people will always admire heroes, and wish they could be them. While there is an endless supply of heroes from the beginning of time, there are only a few definitions, yet over time that definition has changed to an extent. Dictionary.reference.com defines hero as: “A man of distinguished courage of ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities.” Campbell’s definition, “someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself… The hero performs a courageous act in battle and saves lives,” varies quite a bit from the twenty first century definition. In both Joseph Campbell’s definition and dictionary.com’s definition, several characteristics of heroes are laid out before us: courageousness, dedication, and selflessness. These can be considered the three pillars of heroism; these characteristics add character and depth to a hero, other than somebody who performed a glorious act. Courage, the biggest pillar, are the building blocks of a hero, without courage, you simply cannot be an admired hero. Courage allows you…

In my point of view, I think a hero is not only someone who acts in movies and wears fancy clothes or saves his lady from the bad guys, he is someone who stands for strength, bravery, and humbleness. We watch movies to see these action heroes fight for a good cause but we often ignore the real life heroes whom we confront everyday but still don’t care to appreciate their efforts. Forrest Gump, for example, risked his life to save his friend. While trying to save the friend, he came across several other members of his unit whom he saved as well. Sometimes, a hero performs amazing bravery that hold us in fear. Abraham Lincoln and George Washington are father figures who led our nation through times of crisis and…
